Leaders to hear update on the Lakeview Park Trailhead project

Parks and Recreation Commission members will receive an update Tuesday on the Lakeview Park Trailhead project.

Plans to build a park in Lakeview Estates at the trailhead leading to Hobart Reservoir were significantly scaled back this year after controversy erupted.

What had once been considered the site of a 40-acre park with increased parking and greater access, was approved in February by the Carson City Planning Commission as a turnaround area for horse trailers.

The trail, popular among hikers, cyclists and equestrians, has been a source of contention between Lakeview residents and users.

While equestrians have complained that access is too narrow and parking too limited, residents have countered that horses don't belong in their neighborhood.

While no additional parking spaces are planned, leaving room for only about four horse trailers at a time, it was decided that there would be a turnaround loop added to ease entry and exit.

Carson City Park Planner Vern Krahn will present the latest update to the plan when the commission meets at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St.

Other project updates on the commissioners' agenda include the Carson River Park Phase 2, the Arlington Square Ice Skating Rink, the Fuji Dog Park and the Multi-purpose Athletic Center.

Commissioners also will hear a presentation on a preliminary design report for the non-motorized user bridge crossing at Valley View Drive, and could take action to approve a permanent location for the 9/11 World Trade Center Memorial.

• The 911 Surcharge Advisory Committee meets from 8:30-9 a.m. Tuesday at the Carson City Fire Department, 777 S. Stewart St.

• The Shade Tree Council meets from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Sierra Room of the community center.
