ROUNDUP: Dayton girls split at Comstock Classic

VIRGINIA CITY - Dayton High's girls' basketball team split two games at the Comstock Classic on Friday.

Dayton jumped out to a 20-10 first quarter lead over Hawthorne but couldn't hold on falling 52-45 in overtime.

In the second game, Dayton used a 17-4 first quarter advantage to cruise to a 44-22 win over Virginia City.

Coach Cliff Serawop said the Dust Devils learned a valuable lesson about finishing against Hawthorne. Dayton lost the lead after a scoreless third quarter.

In fact, the Dust Devils found themselves down by six, with less than a minute remaining. Serawop said the Dust Devils were down three with less than 10 seconds to play - after a pair of steals and a score and a made free throw by Hawthorne.

Dayton's Destinee Serawop nailed a 3-pointer to force overtime. The coach said the Dust Devils ran out of gas in overtime.

Maribel Ledezma led Dayton with 18 points, five rebounds and five steals. Taylor Hill had 12 points - 9 in the first quarter on three 3-pointers - six blocks and four steals.

Cora Mebius added 11 rebounds for Dayton.

Against the Muckers, Dayton had a 30-8 first-half lead and maintained the advantage throughout the second half.

Ledezma had 14 points and seven steals; Hill had 10 points and four blocks; and Devlynn Lahair had seven points and six rebounds.

"We learned a valuable lesson (against Hawthorne)," Serawop said. "We regrouped and came back against Virginia City and played together."

Dayton, 4-3, plays at 9 a.m. today against Coleville to conclude the tournament.

Carson remains winless

MORRO BAY, Calif. - Carson is 0-5 after losing 41-37 to Ridgeview of Bakersfield Friday at the Morro Bay Invitational.

"That was a pretty decent team we played," said Carson coach Todd Ackerman. "They beat the team that beat us (Atascadero) on Thursday by 20 points. I thought we played well tonight. We just need to eliminate our turnovers, not the ones that are forced."

The Senators were done in Erica McCall, who scored 30 of Ridgeview's points. Ackerman felt that his team defended McCall pretty well.

"We made her work for every point," Ackerman said. "She only got a couple of easy baskets."

Despite McCall's dominance, the Senators had a chance to tie the game and send it into overtime. Carson trailed 40-37 and had the ball with nine seconds left.

"We set the last play up for Eliza (Matley)," Ackerman said. "She got off a shot, but not the one we wanted. We played a good second half."

Matley led Carson with 20 points, while Tiana McAllister-Daggs had her second straight 10-point game. No other Carson players scored more than three points.

Sierra Lutheran falls to North Tahoe

ZEPHYR COVE - The Sierra Lutheran girls varsity basketball team lost 43-22 to North Tahoe at the Whittell Tournament on Friday.

Tiffany Patrick scored 13 points, grabbed 15 boards with six steal and five blocks.

Coach Michael Nelson said the team struggled with its attack on offense. Sierra Lutheran, 1-3, plays two games today. The Falcons play Fernley at noon and Silver Stage at 6 p.m.

JV BOYS BASKETBALL

CHS boys improve to 3-1

RENO - Kyle Denning scored 13 points and Alan Cohen added 10 to lead the Senators to a 49-36 win over McQueen at the Galena Tournament on Friday.

Garrett Schafer added seven, while Robby Miller and Andy Cooper added five each for the Senators, who improved to 3-1.

JV GIRLS BASKETBALL

Peacock leads CHS girls

SPARKS - Gina Peacock scored eight points to lead Carson to a 35-27 win over Bishop Manogue on Friday.

Natali Salas scored six and Skye Simpson added five. Carson plays Lassen at Spanish Springs at 1 p.m. today. Carson is now 3-1.

FRESHMAN GIRLS BASKETBALL

Carson improves to 4-0

RENO - Michelle Perry scored 14 points to lead Carson to a 46-25 win over Reno at the Sierra Winter Classic on Friday.
