The Nevada Appeal's "Silver Dollar" and "Wooden Nickel" feature recognizes positive achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out others that missed the mark.
SILVER DOLLAR: To kicker Austin Pacheco of the Carson High football team for making it into the Top 10 in Friday Night Feats. The nationwide video competition celebrates the best in high school football. To vote, go to fridaynightfeats.com/fnf/.
SILVER DOLLAR: To the Nevada Wildlife Commission for allowing the commercial harvest of crawfish (also known as crayfish, crawdads or mudbugs) from Lake Tahoe. These tasty little creatures are an invasive species that should be more welcomed on a dinner plate than in a vulnerable ecosystem.
SILVER DOLLAR: To Carson City government for earning high honors as a "Digital City" for its policies and practices in information technology. As the state capital, Carson should be on the cutting edge.
SILVER DOLLAR: To all the various civic groups, clubs and businesses in Carson City that are conducting volunteer drives to help the needy have a better Christmas. It's an ongoing source of inspiration to see the people of this community generously pitch in when others needs help.
