Dayton-based mint makes White House Christmas ornaments

Northwest Territorial Mint, based in Dayton, constructed 210 military medals representing all branches of the U.S. military to serve as the White House's Christmas tree ornaments.

The 18-foot fir tree is displayed in the White House's Blue Room. The awards-turned-decorations include Purple Hearts, Bronze Stars, Air Force Crosses, Legion of Merit, Silver Stars and 23 others.

"Everyone at Northwest Territorial Mint is pleased that our company's work will be on view in the nation's home this holiday season," CEO Ross Hansen said in a statement.

Lyon County enrolls in

broadband access program

Connect Nevada, a statewide nonprofit aimed at promoting broadband Internet access, recently led Lyon County leaders through the steps of its "Connected" community certification program.

Current Connect Nevada research shows that businesses with broadband Internet average $100,000 more in annual median revenues than those without, according to a press release. In Lyon County, 97 percent of residents have access to Internet of 768 kbps, and 70 percent have 3 mbps speeds available. Statewide, the vast majority has access to broadband but only about 20 percent choose to use it at home, according to the release.

"With electronic medical records, job search capabilities, and enhanced communications, it's crucial that all generations have the opportunity to participate in advanced technologies," said Kari Larson, the general manager for the Silver Springs-Stagecoach Hospital District. "As the Lyon County point person toward the certification process with Connect Nevada, I hope that this area will receive recommendations and funding that benefits all local residents."

RE/MAX Realty and Carson Valley Inn donate gift cards to needy

The agents and staff at RE/MAX Realty Affiliates of Carson City and the Carson Valley Inn have donated more than $2,250 in gift cards for meals at Bodines and the hotel to struggling families in the area.

The gift cards are being distributed by Food for Thought, a local nonprofit that discreetly provides food to about 600 children in need at 12 local schools throughout the year.

"It's the hope of everyone at RE/MAX Realty Affiliates that in some small way the spirit and joy of the season will be passed on to others in need through our simple efforts," said Phil Reith, Managing Broker at RE/MAX. "These gift cards will provide a wonderful holiday meal to many at-risk children and their families in the area."

Save Mart to open Christmas Day

The Save Mart grocery stores in Carson City will open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Christmas Day. The three area locations are at 3325 Highway 50 East, 4348 S. Carson St., and 3620 N. Carson St., all in Carson City.

Dentists launch training for assistants

A school to train dental assistants has been launched in Carson City by Drs. Clint Euse and Randy Wright of Advanced Dentistry by Design.

The school, Assist to Succeed, trains classes of 10 students at a time. Sessions run on 11 consecutive Saturdays. Tuition for the program is $4,995.

Euse and Wright, who have a combined total of 34 years of practice experience in Carson City, said they decided to launch the school as an alternative to higher-priced colleges that weren't available to students who wanted to keep a day job.

Assist to Succeed students learn skills on the equipment used in the Advanced Dentistry by Design office.

Motel 6 acquired

A Southern California real estate company has acquired the 82-room Motel 6 at 2749 S. Carson St.

The franchise for the Carson City motel was acquired by Carson City Hotel Group LLC, which is headed by Arcadia, Calif. The property previously was owned by Motel 6. Clay Helm has been named general manager.
