Defendants ordered into treatment program

A Dayton man's family made a tearful plea Tuesday to get their heroin-addicted son some help.

"Please help us to save him," said Marie Dean to Judge Todd Russell.

James Montel Dean, 24, pleaded guilty to a charge of possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell.

Maria Dean told Russell that her son had been wreaking havoc on her family, all because of drugs.

"I can't save him," she said.

Dean also admitted an opiate addiction.

"I have a serious drug problem that I need to get help for," he said.

Russell sentenced Dean to 12 to 48 months in prison, suspended on the condition he successfully complete a long-term inpatient drug treatment program. Dean was taken into jail custody until he could get into treatment.

Also before Russell:

• Gary Emerson, 37, pleaded guilty to a charge of possession of a controlled substance. He will be sentenced Aug. 16 after completing a drug treatment program.

• Michael Foster, 40, pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance. He will be sentenced March 29.

• Paul Johnson, 19, pleaded guilty to third-offense domestic battery. Sentencing is set for March 15.

• Jonathan Schaff, 20, was sentenced to 16 to 48 months in prison on a charge of grand larceny. He also received a concurrent sentence of 12 months on a charge of conspiracy to commit burglary. Schaff also must complete a drug treatment program in lieu of going to prison for a second time.
