In two weeks, Carson City residents can join in the fun of a community Mardi Gras celebration complete with a mouth-watering crab feed.
The crab feed is from
6-11 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25 at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church, 3000 N. Lompa Lane.
About 350 people are expected to attend St. Teresa's eighth annual crab feed this year, a fundraiser for the Catholic school.
"What makes this event really unique," Chairwoman Sharon Kassity said, "is that our menu stands out and our silent auction is really elaborate."
The Alaskan crab which will be served is superior to the Dungeness, she said, and it's provided by John Ascuaga. The meal also includes tri-tip prepared by Carson City BBQ Co. The pasta is made on site by Garibaldi's, which also is providing the garlic bread. The salad is from Molly's Catering, and desserts will be offered by the Artisan's Cafe - possibly bread pudding or chocolate mousse, she said.
"Last year I ended up making 350 red velvet cakes, and I just couldn't face that again," she said, laughing.
The evening also includes wine from Clos du Bois and Reynolds Family Winery in Sonoma County, Calif., as well as other beverages.
Another thing that will make the evening special is the decor, Kassity said.
Diane Abbott of Elysium Designs will coordinate everything from the entrance to the tables in purple, green, gold and all things Mardi Gras.
An authentic crab shack also will be available for anyone interested in buying crab merchandise, and dancing is included. Costumes are optional, and deejay for the night will be Carson City's Bill McClain.
The silent auction includes a house rental in Costa Rica and a hand-painted rocker, as well as other unique gifts, she said, adding that the quality of the auction items adds to the value of the evening.
Tickets are $60 per person and can be purchased only at St. Teresa Catholic School, 567 S. Richmond Ave., from
8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Seating is limited and table reservations are available.
Advertisers interested in purchasing placemat sponsorships can call Kassity at 291-1094.
"This is a wonderful addition for our regional businesses," she said.
The crab feed is one of several fundraisers held each year for the school. Proceeds help buy books and other items, and help families with tuition costs.
