Western Nevada's baseball team ended its nine-game road trip on a high note Friday.
The Wildcats swept a doubleheader, 6-1 and 4-3, from previously unbeaten Yavapai, in Prescott, Ariz.
Chris Garrison pitched the WNC to victory in the opener. Garrison tossed a complete game allowing one unearned run in the first inning.
The sophomore gave up five hits, three walks while striking out nine.
WNC was down 1-0 before Pat McMeel hit a solo homer to tie the game. Five batters later, Kevin Taylor gave WNC the lead on a two-run homer.
In the fifth inning, WNC extended its lead on another two-run homer by Taylor.
In the sixth, the Wildcats tacked on an insurance run. After a Jon Sigado double, he stole third and scored on an error.
The Wildcats had nine hits, with Taylor the only one with multiple.
In the second game, the Wildcats rallied to win in the seventh inning. Down 3-0 after three innings, the Wildcats scored single runs in the fifth and sixth before winning the game with two runs in the seventh.
Potkay led the team going 3-for-4. Woolley went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Taylor went 1-for-4 with a run scored. Day had a an RBI groundout. And Sean Dwyer had went 1-for-3.
Anthony Consigilio picked up the win in relief. He threw three innings of two hit ball. He didn't allow a walk and struck out two.
WNC, 6-7, returns to action Friday at Riverside Junior College.
SOFTBALL
WNC DROPS DOUBLEHEADER
The WNC softball team lost 10-0 and 10-2 against Salt Lake Community College on Friday.
The Wildcats, who return only one player who saw the field last year, were overmatched by SLCC, which had already played 16 games this season.
In the opener Carson High alum Cassie Vondrak took the loss. WNC gave up three in the second, four in the third and three in the fourth.
WNC's bats were still in hibernation as fellow Carson High alum Megan Hein had WNC's only hit.
In the second game, WNC's bats woke up.
The Wildcats collected six hits. Melanie Pfeiffer and Ashley Gleason were responsible for the RBIs. Gleason's came on a home run.
Sarah Cudahy scored for WNC.
Making her first start at WNC, Jamie Klopatek allowed five runs in the first, a single run in the third and fourth innings and three in the fifth in taking the loss.
WNC and Salt Lake conclude the series today with a doubleheader.
