A new dance studio has opened in the heart of downtown Carson City.

Yaple's Ballroom Dance Studio, 315 N. Carson St., opened earlier this month next door to Kim Lee's Sushi. Jon Yaple, a long-time Carson City attorney whose office is in the back, is partnering with Adam and Tiffany Hopkins who run the dance studio.

"It's perfect to go out to dinner and come dancing," Tiffany Hopkins, 24, said.

Starting next month, Wednesdays will feature Latin-style dances with instructor Roberto Hernandez, every Friday is West Coast Swing and every Saturday is classical ballroom dancing. They will offer other styles of dance instruction including Zumba, waltz and salsa.

Group activities are $5 and private lessons are $25 as an introductory price. The Hopkinses also offer wedding packages, which include dance lessons and DJ services for receptions.

The 1,900-square-foot building includes a 1,000-square-foot dance studio that features floor to ceiling mirrors and a "floating sprung" dance floor designed to give when people are on it.

"Everything you see is brand new," Yaple said.

The Hopkinses live in Dayton and met while ballroom dancing in Reno, Tiffany said.

"We tried doing private lessons just at home or at the golf course in Dayton," she said.

Adam Hopkins, 29, said he and his wife have attended numerous professional dance camps.

Yaple said the studio and the Carson Nugget will co-host a West Coast Swing dance competition on the first weekend of April. He's also the president of the High Sierra West Coast Swing Dance Club.

As for his partnership with the Hopkinses: "This is a perfect fit," he said.

Frozen yogurt shop coming to Carson

Just after the Topsy Lane shopping center greeted Mmmmm Yogurt last year, the shopping center near Carson City's Walmart will soon welcome its own frozen yogurt shop.

Yogo Frozen Yogurt and Sweet Treats, 3250 Retail Drive, Suite 105, filed for a business license earlier this month.

The business still is awaiting the approval of some city permits before opening.

New business amid a leaky economy

Brian Danielson had spent 16 years in the plumbing business.

And after spending all those years working for other companies, four months ago the 36-year-old Minden man decided to start his own business, New Pioneer Plumbing and Heating LLC., which serves the entire region.

It's the first time he's ever run his own business. His inspiration for starting it was, "a lack of work."

"A lot of the shops around town are slowing down," Danielson said. "I've been wanting to do it for quite a few years and I was in the position where I could do it."

Danielson said he can do services, repair, new construction and remodels as well as in-floor heating and boiler repair.

Danielson said the last four months have gone smoothly, though it's still a challenge.

"When the economy was better the work would just come," he said. "I'm having to chase a lot of the work down."
