As of Saturday night, the first Carson City baby of the new year had not yet been born, but parents Holly Theisen and Richard Peden of Carson City were hopeful the happy event would occur before the end of the day.

With a birth date of 1-1-11, the new baby's birthright would include a birthday not easily forgotten.

Theisen checked into Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center around 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

"It's their first baby, so (we) have no idea how fast labor will be," said hospital marketing coordinator Diane Rush.

As of 6 p.m., however, no other mothers in labor had checked into the hospital, so it looked like their chances were good to deliver Carson City's first baby of 2011.

"There is always an outside chance someone else might show up and beat them," Rush said

Typically, the first baby of the new year is showered with gifts from the Carson Tahoe Auxiliary. The layette includes many items including receiving blankets and a first-baby onesie.

Meanwhile, at Renown Children's Hospital in Reno, the first baby in the region was born to Jennifer Chamberlin, 36, of Reno.

Chamberlin gave birth to Emma Marguerite at 12:02 a.m. Saturday. Baby Emma weighed 7 pounds, 9 ounces.
