RENO - Carson High's boys basketball team tuned up for today's showdown with Douglas by knocking off Wooster 65-50 Friday night.
Carson improved to 3-2 in Northern 4A play. Carson hosts Douglas today at 5 p.m.
"It was a real physical game," Carson coach Bruce Barnes said. "There were a lot of fouls called and a lot of free throws shot. We did what we needed to do (to win). We were able to play a lot of guys tonight."
Carson led by 11 at the quarter and 13 at the intermission, 32-19. Chris Steele, who finished with 16 points, had 11 in the first half. Brian Barnes, who also finished with 16, had nine in the first half.
"Chris played well in the first half," Barnes said. "Defensively we played pretty well. We were able to press them and get some turnovers. Once we got out of the first quarter, the game was a little more fluid.
"Today will be a tough game. They are one of the teams to beat. They are awful good."
MANOGUE TOPS TIGERS
RENO -The Douglas boys' basketball team hit more field goals and more 3-pointers than defending regional champion Manogue Friday night.
Against the sharp-shooting Miners, that's quite an accomplishment.
But Manogue got to the line early and often, riding a 31-of-40 performance from the charity stripe to a 79-68 Sierra League win.
"They did a good job of getting to the line," Douglas coach Corey Thacker said. "You can't guard them at the free-throw line."
The 31 made free throws rank second in the NIAA state record book among 4A teams (Douglas is first with 36 against Wooster in 2007). Manogue's Ethan Dillard set the state 4A record for free throws made in a game, hitting 19 of his 20 shots while leading the Miners with 26 points.
Douglas went up 7-0 to open the game but Manogue quickly fought back into it with a 5-0 run over the next minute. The Miners worked out a 15-12 lead heading into the second quarter and stretched it to 18-12 in a 3-pointer from Brennan Hogan, who finished with 20 points, to open the second.
Manogue carried a 40-28 lead into halftime and stretched it out to 44-28 with a 4-0 run to open the third. Another 8-0 run later in the quarter put them up 52-33.
Theo Denson, Austin Neddenriep and Hunter Myers each had 14 points.
