Lauren Knorzer became the third Carson player in as many years to accept a softball scholarship to Western Nevada College.
Knorzer, who was a designated hitter and first baseman last spring at Carson, signed her letter-of-intent Tuesday afternoon at WNC. She'll join coach Leah Wentworth's squad next fall.
The school's nursing program was a key in Knorzer's decision. Western Nevada has been the frontrunner for Knorzer's services since the program started.
"It's exciting," Knorzer said. "I don't have to worry about it now. Western Nevada has the best nursing program (around).
"I've tried to follow them after I heard they were going to have a softball team. I'll be going to a bunch of games this year."
Knorzer came on strong at the plate at the end of her sophomore year, and enjoyed a successful junior season. She hit .458 with 17 RBIs.
Where Knorzer plays defensively is anybody's guess. The Carson senior played third base on her summer team, but also has experience behind the plate.
"She (coach Wentworth) likes my hitting," Knorzer said when asked where Wentworth would play her. "Coach was saying infield. She said she would find a spot for me.
"My No. 1 position is third base. I like shortstop and I also like to catch. I played third the whole time this summer."
Knorzer said she played some fall ball with the Nevada Comets, which meant traveling to Sacramento and the San Joaquin Valley for weekend tournaments.
Preseason conditioning at Carson right at the beginning of January, and Knorzer is happy to be back on the diamond. When you focus on one sport like Knorzer does, it's a long time between seasons.
