Western Nevada College's baseball team has been ranked sixth in the country in a poll released recently by Collegiate Baseball.

It's the fourth straight year the Wildcats have received a top-20 preseason ranking. In 2008, WNC was ranked fifth to start the season.

In 2010, WNC started the season at No. 10 and went on to win 43 game. WNC already has won 209 games in five years.

This is one of the youngest squads coach DJ Whittemore has had. The Wildcats lost four players to Division I programs off last year's roster.

"We are heading into the season with quite a few unknowns," Whittemore said. "We only return seven players from last year.

"Despite our youth and inexperience, we think that we have restocked the cupboards well and will be competitive in the always tough Scenic West Conference."

Two of the returnees are outfielder Brooks Klein and catcher Pat McMeel.

WNC opens the season on Jan. 28th in Las Vegas against South Mountain College. The Wildcats will play their first 16 games on the road. WNC's home opener is a Scenic West Conference series against Colorado Northwestern Community College on March 4.
