AAA Carson City and Carson City Toyota/Scion Host Show and Shine

On Saturday, July 16, the Carson City AAA office and Dick Campagni's Carson City Toyota/Scion Dealership will co-host a classic car show and shine event. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Carson City Toyota Dealership, 3659 S. Carson St. Barbecue and frozen yogurt will be available for purchase from Sierra Joe's and MmmmmYogurt. All classic car cruisers are welcome to participate; space is limited to the first 80 entrants. Entry fee is $25 and proceeds will benefit local charities. Save Mart Supermarkets to raise funds for children's hospitals

All Save Mart, S-Mart Foods, Lucky, FoodMaxx, and Maxx Value Foods stores will sell paper icons for $1 from July 11-31. The funds collected will be donated to children's hospitals throughout Northern Nevada and Central and Northern California.

Shoppers can offer their support at the checkstand when they pay for their groceries. Once purchased, the icons will be displayed in the stores. Children's hospitals combine personal care with sophisticated, state-of-the art technology to provide 24-hour care and services such as trauma, burn, neonatal intensive care and pediatric intensive care units to children with special needs from throughout the country and the world.

Kids Triathlon set for July 23

The Capital City Kids' Triathlon will be held July 23. Start times for the swim-bike-run event are 8 a.m. for ages 14-18, 8:45 a.m. for ages 11-13, 9:30 a.m. for ages 9-10, 10 a.m. for ages 7-8, and 10:30 a.m. for ages 4-6.

Registration opens at 7:30 a.m. at the Carson City Aquatic Center, 841 E. Roop St. Advance registration by July 12 is $15 per participant. Registration on the day of the event is $20, with checks payable to Carson Tigersharks.

Participants need to check in and be ready 30 minutes before their start time and must provide their own bike and helmet.

Only children ages 6 and under are allowed assistance in the pool and transitions.

Participants will receive a Triathlon T-shirt, and every finisher will receive a medal.

Volunteer needed for Shade Tree Council

The Carson City Board of Supervisors is seeking applications from people interested in serving on the Shade Tree Council. There is one volunteer opening to be filled.

The Shade Tree Council provides advice to the Board of Supervisors on matters concerning the development, maintenance, management and promotion of a safe, healthy and attractive urban forest in Carson City.

This term will expire in January. A minimum commitment of up to 10 hours a month is expected. All members will serve without compensation. Applicants must be Carson City residents and registered voters to qualify. Volunteer applications may be obtained from and returned to the Carson City Executive Offices 201 N. Carson Street, #2. An evening with bats set for July 16

Bats are some of the most misunderstood animals. Join park volunteer and bat expert Brian Buttazoni for an informative evening program, "The World of Bats." Learn about what bats eat, where they live, how they are beneficial to people and how to observe them.

An evening with bats will be from 8:30-10 p.m. at the hang-gliding landing zone at the main entrance to Washoe Lake State Park, off U.S. Highway 395 on East Lake Blvd. north of Carson City.

In addition to seeing photos of some of the 1,232 species of bats found around the world, visitors will have the opportunity to hear the sounds that bats make as they hunt prey. After a slide presentation, the group may visit a site close by to watch and listen to active bats with a bat detector.

Summer is here and there's no better time to learn to swim. The Carson Aquatic Facility is offering two more sessions this summer.

Enjoy July Jazz Under the Stars

The Mile High Jazz Band with vocalist Sheryl Adams presents an evening of big-band Jazz Under the Stars from 8-10 p.m. Tuesday at Comma Courtyard adjacent to Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson Street.

Admission is $5 general, free for ages 18 and younger.

There will also be salsa dance instruction from 6-7:15 p.m. inside Comma Coffee for an additional $5.

"Come hear the music and dance under the stars!" said David Bugli, leader and pianist for the Mile High Jazz Band. "We'll play a great mix of your old favorites and some newer tunes. If it rains, we'll move the show indoors."

Prebezac elected to Carson Valley Chamber board

Ursula Prebezac, senior vice president of City National Bank, Nevada's Premier Private and Business Bank, has been elected to the board of directors of the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Prebezac was elected to a three-year term and also serves as the chair of the Chamber's membership committee.

Prebezac is a 34-year veteran of the banking industry and has been with City National for the past nine years. She is responsible for the bank's Commercial Banking Services group in the Carson City and Carson Valley areas, which also includes Stateline at South Lake Tahoe.

"We are very excited to have Ursula join our board and become part of one of the most talented and qualified groups of business professionals in northern Nevada," said Bill Chernock, executive director of the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce. "She brings a wealth of knowledge and lifetime of experience to our board that will be invaluable in our mission to identify and address the changing needs of the business community in our area."

In addition to her newly appointed board position with the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce, Prebezac also serves as a Court Appointed Advocate for Children (CASA) of Douglas County, and as a volunteer for Kids and Horses in Minden. She is also a past member of the Tahoe/Douglas Chamber of Commerce, Republican Women, and Soroptimist International.

Assisted living center recognized for performance

Carson Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, 2898 Highway 50 East, has been recognized as a 2011 recipient of the Bronze Commitment to Quality National Quality Award for its outstanding performance in the health care profession.

This award, presented by the American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living, highlights facilities across the nation that have demonstrated their intention to pursue a rigorous quality improvement system.
