Library News and Notes: So many authors, so many stories for this summer

Creating a downloadable e-book in a little over two hours, author, illustrator, book-telling performer Laurie Story has delighted Carson City young readers before. Her return visit coincides with and enhances the theme of the library's Summer Reading Program, "One World, Many Stories," as she presents "Free Flying Frolicking Flags: Read Around the World" in a special family story time at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday. Join her and then check out her fun-filled website, www.lauriesstories.com where a free membership includes downloadable videos, book samples, phonics play pages, interactive games and more. According to Ms. Story, "Children deserve play time and literacy lasts a lifetime." Because of the length of this program, there will be no story time at 10:45.

Special story time with Jared Dempsey

Carson High School student Jared Dempsey will be the guest reader during a special story time at 4 p.m. Friday. Jared has long been a library patron and volunteer, and this event is part of his vocational studies program. He uses advanced technology called a dynavox, which enables those with certain learning disabilities to communicate and interact with others.

Friends of the Library Annual Dinner

The Friends of the Library's annual dinner meeting, featuring and guest author and speaker Dale Brown, begins at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Plaza Hotel Convention Center. Though this event is for members only, it is easy to join the Friends and attend (applications as well as tickets are available at the Browser's Corner at the library). Activities include a no-host bar; a dinner beginning around 5:30 p.m. with a beef or vegetarian selection for $10; a brief meeting around 6:15 p.m., followed by a talk by Brown. His latest book, "A Time for Patriots," debuted in May. Add a raffle and a plane construction/flying "exercise" and enjoy an interesting, entertaining evening.

Ruth Anne Kocour returns

Ruth Anne Kocour, mountaineer, photographer and author of "Walking the War Zones of Pakistan," has twice traveled to this enigmatic, dangerous part of the world, and has previously spoken to a standing-room-only audience at the library. She returns at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 20, in the library auditorium to present a glimpse of the region and its people.

Interesting July events

Beginning at 4:30 on Wednesday in the library auditorium, the League of Women Voters will present a workshop on the health care bill.

Don't forget the Lego Club, which meets from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday in the auditorium. This free program is limited to the first 50 who sign up, so visit the youth desk to reserve a place.

For those who are interested in or have information regarding the early history of Carson City, the Carson City Historical Research Group meets at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 23, in the auditorium. The group will be able to take advantage of the extensive Nevada collection of materials available in the library.
