Charter hosts customer appreciation day

Charter is setting aside Friday to officially celebrate its Carson City customers with an Appreciation Day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at its sales and service office at 284 E. Winnie Lane.

"We appreciate the loyalty of our customers in the Carson City area and we are looking forward to celebrating with them on Friday," said Scott Dockery, director of operations for Charter in Nevada. "Charter continues to provide more channels and faster Internet speeds than ever before, but taking time to say 'Thanks' to our customers is important to us as well."

Refreshments will be served throughout Appreciation Day and drawings will be held for Charter services and other great prizes, including a home theater system, a portable DVD player and a gas grill. One of Charter's Broadband technicians will be available at the Ask the Technician table to answer customer questions about Charter Internet, high definition service, Charter On Demand and more. Charter Business representatives will also be on hand to answer questions about Charter's commercial services to area businesses.

Alternative school graduation Thursday

Graduation ceremony for the first class of students to complete their education at The Children's Cabinet's School of Life Alternative School will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Governor's Mansion, 606 Mountain St. in Carson City.

The class of 12 will consist of students receiving their GED or high school diploma. At the ceremony, five students will be awarded scholarships to attend Truckee Meadows Community College. The scholarships will provide the recipients with money for tuition and books as long as they maintain a minimum 2.75 grade point average during college. Students who applied for the scholarships were encouraged to do so by their case managers at The Children's Cabinet.

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval and his wife, Kathleen will speak during the graduation ceremony. Students enrolled in the School of Life have been referred to The Children's Cabinet program from traditional high schools, probation officers and counselors or have heard of the school from other students.

Funding for the School of Life is provided by donations and grants. The donations received during the Art of Childhood dinner on Sept. 30 at the Governor's Mansion in Carson City will help The Children's Cabinet continue to fund the School of Life and encourage students to achieve their educational goals. Hear one woman's journey into the shadow of the Taliban

Carson City Library will host author, adventurer and photographer Ruth Anne Kocour at 6 p.m. July 20.

Kocour presented her slide show at the library to a standing-room only audience in 2010. Her book, "Walking the War Zones of Pakistan", has since been published. This presentation takes visitors on her journeys to K2 and Pakistan's tribal regions bordering Afghanistan, Kashmir and China.

The program will show photographs of the topography that has led to physical and cultural isolation of people who for centuries have been kept in the dark by natural barriers, lack of infrastructure, lack of communication, and by illiteracy.

Kocour's adventures have been featured on CNN's International Hour and the Discovery Channel. Her photos and stories have appeared in People, Harper's Bazaar, Health, Sunset, Los Angeles Times and San Francisco Chronicle.

She has climbed and trekked throughout Asia, Europe, Africa and the Americas, and shared the ascent to the summit of Alaska's Mount McKinley in her book, "Facing the Extreme."

Summer swim lessons offered

Summer is here and there's no better time to learn to swim than the Carson Aquatic Facility, which is offering two more sessions this summer.

Muscle Powered hosts picnic

Muscle Powered is hosting its annual picnic 3-7 p.m. Saturday at the Red House at Silver Saddle Ranch on Carson River Road.

All members, past, present and future, are invited.  

There will be games, food and a bike ride or hike followed by a potluck picnic.

Participants should bring a dish to share and their own meat to grill.

To avoid using paper products and adding to the landfill, the group requests that participants bring their own place settings.

Bring games to play. Drinks will be provided, alcohol will not be permitted.

Free Chinese lessons for children at Dayton Valley Branch Library

Dayton Valley Branch Library's summer reading program theme, "One World, Many Stories," will include free Chinese lessons for up to 10 children per lesson at 10 a.m. July 15, 22 and 29.

The teacher will be Star Erickson of Dayton who has a Bachelor of Arts in Chinese and speaks the language fluently.

"For nearly two years I lived in Taiwan and I was completely immersed in the language and culture while I was there" Erickson said.

Erickson is also the new leader for the Dayton Task Force, part of Healthy Communities Coalition. The Chinese lessons are funded through Dayton Task Force in partnership with Dayton Library.

Senior Follies show 'From Broadway to Hollywood'

Senior Follies invites residents to take a trip "From Broadway to Hollywood" on July 23 and July 24.

This year's production will take theater-goers through memorable moments of great all-time stage musicals, movies and television performances. Many favorite senior follies performers are back again along with a few new faces this year and they are ready to use their talents to take a magical journey through the world of entertainment. Performers promise to elicit laughs, smiles, and sing-a-longs.

Performances this year are 7:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and a July 24 matinee at 2 p.m. Ticket prices are $10 per person and can be purchased in advance at the Senior Center or at the door at the time of the performance. There will be a raffle and concessions in the lobby before the show and during intermission.

Senior Follies is a benefit for the Senior Meals programs.

Volunteers sought for Historic Resources Commission

The Carson City Board of Supervisors is seeking applications from persons interested in serving on the Historic Resources Commission. There are two positions available, one of which is in the building construction professional category.

The second position available is in one of the following categories: architect or design professional, building construction professional, archeology, anthropology, history professional or a property owner who resides within the district.

The Historic Resources Commission reviews and makes decisions regarding projects in the Carson City Historic District and/or recommendations to the Regional Planning Commission and/or Board of Supervisors regarding matters relating to Carson City historic resources.

The term of the Building Construction Professional will expire July 2013. The other term will expire February 2015. Applicants should be aware that a minimum commitment of up to 10 hours every other month is expected. All members serve without compensation. Applicants must be residents of Carson City and registered voters.
