MINDEN - A 10-year-old boy died from injuries he received in a rollover accident on Highway 395 just north of Airport Road on Thursday evening.
The preliminary crash investigation indicates a silver Ford Explorer was southbound on Highway 395 just north of Airport Road when the driver, Maria Santos Vargas, lost control causing it to roll over at about 5:32 p.m.
Rescuers arrived to find the Ford on its side and pointed north. Felix Vargas was trapped underneath the vehicle, which had to be lifted off of him.
Felix was transported by Care Flight helicopter to Renown Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 11:37 p.m.
Vargas was transported via Care Flight to Renown Medical Center with nonlife threatening injuries. Trooper Danny Lopez said Vargas has a Texas drivers' license, but the Explorer was registered in Gardnerville.
There were a total of eight passengers in the Explorer, two others who were transported to Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center with nonlife-threatening injuries. Everyone else was treated at the accident scene.
Traffic was backed up for 90 minutes as East Fork medics treated the injured and the Nevada Highway Patrol investigated the accident.
Resident Carol Aldax said she was on her computer when she heard the crash inside her home.
Ambulances from Carson City and Topaz were called to help cover Carson Valley while medics responded to the accident.
