Classic cars get emission test exemptions

(AP) - Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval has signed a bill exempting classic cars that have special designated license plates from smog emission test requirements.

AB2 was signed by the governor Monday.

To qualify for the exemption, owners have to certify the vehicle hasn't been driven more than 5,000 miles in the previous year. But they still have to pay a fee required to obtain an emission compliance certification, currently $6.

The law also says that if a car fails an emissions test, the Department of Motor Vehicles can't issue a special "Old Timer," "Street Rod," "Classic Rod," or "Classic Vehicle" license plate for that vehicle for 90 days.

That provision is to discourage people from seeking a classic car license plate just to skirt the smog test.
