Dayton hosts First

Tee tournament

Dayton Valley Golf Club will be the site of Monday's First Tee of Northern Nevada golf tournament.

The cost is $150, which includes a continental breakfast, range balls, lunch, dinner and awards ceremony.

Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. Golf will be at 11 a.m. in a shotgun format.

All proceeds go to the First Tee in the area. The group helps introduce kids to the game of golf.

Taylor's double keys Bullets' 7-3 win

The Nevada Bullets improved to 7-1 with a

7-3 win over the Tahoe Braves Wednesday at Western Nevada College.

The Bullets trailed 2-0 in the fifth, but former WNC player Kevin Taylor hit a bases-loaded double to give the Bullets a 3-2. Taylor eventually scored to make it 4-2. The Bullets added one in the seventh and two more in th eighth,

Tyler Spencer, who turned down an offer from the Orioles this week, pitched the eighth and Tyson Flannery pitched a spotless ninth. Flannery touched 90 on the rader gun en route o striking out the side.

Kevin Schulewitch was credited with his second win in three decisions.


Ex-Tiger Northrup, dead at 71

DETROIT (AP) - Former Detroit Tigers outfielder Jim Northrup, who hit a decisive two-run triple in Game 7 of the 1968 World Series, died Wednesday. He was 71.

Longtime friend Bill Wischman said Northrup after having a seizure at an assisted living facility in Grand Blanc. Wischman says Northrup had been in poor health for some time and had been at the home for about a month because of Alzheimer's disease.

Northrup spent parts of 12 seasons in the major leagues.

His seventh-inning triple off the St. Louis Cardinals' Bob Gibson in the final game of the 1968 series broke open a scoreless game and scored Norm Cash and Willie Horton. Detroit went on to win 4-1.
