Carson River canoe trip at Lahontan State Recreation Area

Nevada State Parks is hosting a canoe trip down the Carson River 8-11 a.m. June 25. The trip covers a stretch of the Carson River from just below the Lahontan Dam (River Camp) to the diversion dam, about three and a half miles downstream.

The trip will take about two and half hours, and participants are welcome to return to River Camp with a picnic lunch and visit with park staff.

Vehicles will be available to return participants to River Camp at the end of the tour.

Nevada State Parks' canoes are available to reserve by calling (775) 577-2226, ext. 3. When making reservations, leave a name and phone number in case of any scheduling changes. Participants bringing their own canoe/kayak are asked to bring a life jacket and paddle for each person in their boat.

The dam side of Lahontan State Recreation Area is located off U.S. Highway 50, 18 miles west of Fallon and 45 miles northeast of Carson City. Participants will meet at River Camp on the Lahontan Dam side of the park at 9 a.m. Participants bringing their own boats are asked to show up at 8 a.m. to shuttle their vehicle to the take-out point.

There is a $7 per vehicle entrance fee. Nevada residents receive a $2 discount.

All participants are asked to bring appropriate clothing, bug repellant, sunscreen and water. Bring a picnic lunch, if you would like to stay after the trip and have lunch by the river.

Capitol City Kids Triathlon next month

The annual Capitol City Kids Triathlon on will be 7:30 a.m. July 23 at the Carson City Aquatic Center. The triathlon is open to children ages 4-18. Registration is $15 f received by July 12, day-of registration is $20.

Participants will receive T-shirts and medals.

Distances and start times vary depending on age.

Trail trial at Fort Churchill coming up

Lyon County Horseman's Association Trail Trial will be 9:30 a.m. June 25 at Horse Camp area of Fort Churchill Park.

There will be youth, adult and senior divisions, and all divisions have novice, intermediate and advanced skill levels.

Cost is $30 youth, $35 adult/senior, with a $5 discount if pre-entered by June 20, $10 schooling/companion rider.

Rim trail association seeks volunteers

The Tahoe Rim Trail Association is looking for volunteers for its trail building workdays at Stateline for the Daggett Summit Trail Project.

Workdays are Tuesdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in June. Volunteers of all skill levels and physical abilities are welcome and encouraged to participate - no prior experience necessary.

Groups are welcome to participate.

This is the third trail-building season of the multi-year Daggett Summit project, which will connect the Tahoe Rim Trail (TRT) with the Van Sickle State Park, re-route the TRT off of paved roads, and provide stunning views of Lake Tahoe to more people. Last year 5 miles of new trail was built, but the group still needs to build 4 more miles.

Volunteers should bring their own lunch & water, wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, boots, work gloves, and bring sunscreen, bug spray, water and a backpack. The Tahoe Rim Trail Association will provide hard hats, trail building tools and expert crew leaders.
