Two-day Sierra Swing Showcase April 2-3

High Sierra Swing Dance Club and the Carson Nugget present the Sierra Swing Showcase April 2-3 in the Nugget's upstairs ballroom, 507 N. Carson St. Dance contests and workshops for adults and youths are interspersed with open dancing to a variety of DJ music.

The Swing Into Spring Formal Dinner Dance and "Local Celebrities Who Think They Can Dance" contest is 6 p.m.-midnight April 2.

Cost for the full two-day event plus dinner dance is $40 until April 1 and $50 thereafter. Competitions and open dancing are $10 a day; spectators only are $5 a day; dance workshops are $5; competitions entry is $5 per person per contest; the dinner dance is $30 for advance tickets only.

African dance workshop offered

An African dance workshop for children ages 7 and older will be from 10 a.m.-noon April 2 at the 2556 Precision Drive, No. E, in Minden.

Youngsters will learn fun moves with Odette Barry and the morning will feature live drumming with Liz Brosco at the TPAPNN Studio.

Barry has been studying African dance for 15 years and is currently assisting Broscoe in school presentations in the Douglas County, South Lake Tahoe and Washoe County school districts.

Sam Bauman: An author event

The Carson City Library will host local author and journalist Sam Bauman at 6:30 p.m. March 21.

Bauman's new novel, "Confessions of a Paper Pimp," is a novel about one man's love and life in a world tour of fascinating places and an exciting career as an Air Force pilot and foreign correspondent.

Bauman has worked as a journalist in Asia, Europe, Africa and the Middle East. He has worked for Stars and Stripes, the New York Herald Tribune, Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, and Dubuque Telegraph Herald. In retirement he is writing for the Nevada Appeal. He is a professional skier and lives in Carson City.
