Baseball: Western Nevada College completes 4-game sweep

PRICE, Utah - Western Nevada College upped its Scenic West Athletic Conference record to 8-0 with a doubleheader sweep of Eastern Utah Saturday afternoon.

WNC won the opener 5-2 thanks to 4.2 innings of relief by Anthony Consiglio, who took over for Tim Peterson in the third inning. WNC rolled in the nightcap with a 16-2 victory thanks to an 11-run outburst in the third. The second game was stopped after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

"It was the best weekend of the year for us in terms of battling on every pitch," WNC coach D.J. Whittemore said. "I thought we played extremely well."

The competition will get much better this weekend when College of Southern Nevada comes in for a four-game series starting Friday.

In the opener, Sean Dwyer hit a bases-loaded triple for an early 3-0 lead. With a 3-1 lead, Eastern Utah loaded the bases with one out in the third. Consiglio came in and went the rest of the way to pick up the victory. Consiglio went 4.2 innings, struck out three, walked one and allowed three hits. He did allow a sacrifice fly, but the score was charged to Peterson.

Whittemore said he had no qualms about making the move because Consiglio has been the Wildcats' best pitcher out of the pen.

Chris Woolley hit a sacrifice fly to make it 4-2 in the fifth and Taylor Smart drove in WNC's final run in the seventh.

WNC catcher Beau Day left the game with a concussion after an Eastern Utah runner didn't slide at the plate. Whittemore was told by the plate umpire that the move wasn't malicious.

In the second game, WNC scored three in the second, 11 in the third and two in the fourth.

Kody Gorden went three innings and gave up both runs to pick up the win. Matt Robertson worked two scoreless innings of one-hit ball. He also fanned three batters.

WNC hit three homers in the second game. Dwyer hit a three-run shot in the second, Bobby Pappin hit a two-run homer and Connor Eppard had a solo shot. Brooks Klein and Sean Potkay had two hits apiece for the Wildcats.
