MINDEN - Just because the Fallon baseball team was realigned into the 3A classification this year doesn't mean it can't stake a claim to being one of the top teams in Northern Nevada.
Douglas High can certainly attest to that.
The Greenwave scratched together some timely hits and relied on tough defense and a couple of solid pitching performances to take a 4-1 over the Tigers in a non-league game in Minden Tuesday afternoon.
"They kicked our butts today, bottom line," Douglas coach Bruce Jacobsen said.
That was evident from the start Tuesday afternoon as Frank deBraga blistered a one-out single down the third baseline and Colton Oney and Donovan Marshall each drew walks to load the bases in the top of the first.
Connor Mathison hit a sacrifice fly to shallow right to score deBraga, and Deone Mendez singled to bring Oney in for the early 2-0 lead.
Fallon starter Alonzo Williams worked quickly through the Tiger lineup after surrendering a leadoff single to Leo Trebotich.
Williams retired nine of Douglas' next 11 batters, walking the other two. He was replaced on the mound in the fourth by Roman Hucks, who allowed three hits and just one run over the next four innings.
Douglas got on the board in the fifth loading the bases with no outs when Kameron Van Winkle singled down the third baseline to bring Brett Parks home.
The following runner was waved through for what would have been a game-tying run at the time, but a miscommunication resulted in the runner being thrown out at home.
Hucks intentionally walked Matt Thomas to reload the bases, but he induced an inning-ending double play to get out of the jam.
Thomas took the loss despite allowing only two hits while striking out three and walking two.
Jackson Ketron pitched two hitless innings with a strikeout for the Tigers and Van Winkle pitched a pair of innings with four strikeouts and no walks.
Trebotich, Van Winkle, Tanner Egan and Walker Gemmill accounted for Douglas' hits while Van Winkle had Douglas' only RBI.
Douglas dropped to 4-2 overall and will open league play Saturday at home against Reed at 11 a.m.
DAYTON 25, ROP 0
DAYTON - The Dust Devils rolled to their fifth straight win without a loss Tuesday afternoon over error-prone ROP.
Logan Jones, T.J. Harner and Kyle Farnworth combined on a 1-hitter with 11 strikeouts. Harner worked the first two innings, fanning five and allowing ROP's only hit.
Harner and Logan Garling homered for the Dust Devils, who started out 7-0 two years ago.
Sam Hadley, Jones, Conner Oliver, Houston Berntson, Farnworth, harner and Garling all collected two hits. Farnworth had a team-high three RBIs. Dayton had only seven RBIs on the day.
JV BASEBALL
CARSON TOPS WOOSTER
Carson High improved to 3-2 overall with a 13-5 win over Wooster in the 4A JV opener for both teams.
Tyler Valley worked four innings on the mound, allowing two runs and three hits. Valley helped himself at the plate, going 2-for-5 with two runs and a RBI.
Logan Krupp also collected two hits. Jace Zampirro and Gehrig Tucker each had a two-run homer, while Danny Okimura doubled home two runs. Nevin Elliott added a hit as did Rafe King.
