(AP) - The Senate Judiciary Committee is discussing two bills that would cap runaway collection fees incurred by homeowners associations.

SB195 and SB243 are set for a hearing Thursday morning. They hold homeowners responsible for the overdue payments, but would limit how much HOAs can charge for the cost of pursuing delinquent owners.

SB195 is sponsored by Las Vegas Republican Sen. Elizabeth Halseth and 10 other lawmakers, and limits how much an association can charge for collection based on the debt. For example, a homeowner who owes $200 in fees can be charged a maximum of $50 for debt collection.

SB243 is sponsored by Las Vegas Democratic Sen. Allison Copening and establishes fees for certain services, such as allowing associations to charge $300 for recording a notice of a lien.
