'Cake Dive' featured at wedding expo

Brides- and grooms-to-be are invited to plunge into planning at the Capital City Wedding & Events Expo, noon - 5 p.m. Sunday at Carson Nugget's second floor ballroom.

The event will bring wedding couples, party planners and service providers together from across Nevada and California. The expo is a convenient way for to shop, plan, sample, and gather unique and innovative ideas to create an ultimate wedding day experience, pre-nuptial event and honeymoon.

The event will offer one-stop shopping from more than 25 different vendors offering everything from dresses and formal wear, invitations, decorations, caterers, music and more.

Grooms will be able to relax in the "man cave" during the event.

Registered brides will be invited to participate in a dance-off contest in which the final four dancers will have a chance to dive into a wedding cake to find a pair of Topaz earrings. The first to find the jewelry will take home the earrings. The Cake Dive will take place at approximately 4:30 p.m.

Attendance to the expo is $5; free for registered wedding couples.

A portion of the event proceeds will benefit Carson High School Crisis Fund.

Nugget to host winemaker dinner Monday evening

The Nugget will host a winemaker dinner featuring Handley Cellars of Philo, Calif. The dinner will take place at 5 p.m. Monday in the Nugget Steakhouse. Cost is $75 per person.

The dinner will feature six courses paired with various wines from Handley Cellars. The first course from Nick DeMagistris, director of food and beverage and executive chef at the Nugget, and his team will be a poached dungeness crab. The second course will be a grilled pork tenderloin medallion. The third course will feature Bodega Bay black cod. The fourth course called "The Refresher" will feature a seared bay scallop. The fifth course will feature grilled beef culotte and the final course will feature a baked apple crisp sponge cake.

"We select 10 to 12 boutique wineries per year," DeMagistris said. "We love having the winemakers and owners at every dinner to explain the process, inner-workings and details of how the wine is made. All the guests love the interaction."
