The biggest news thus far of the spring sports season has been the weather which is absolutely playing havoc with teams in the area.
Maybe No. 2 on the news list is the Dayton High baseball team. The Dust Devils have quietly put together an 11-0 start after sweeping Lowry, Elko and Spring Creek on the road over the weekend.
The Dust Devils have gotten great pitching from Timo Ply, Houston Berntson and Conner Oliver. Offensively, Dayton is getting help throughout the line-up. It's not just one or two guys carrying the team.
Case in point came on Saturday when Logan Garling, the No. 9 hitter, hit a grandslam to key the win over Spring Creek.
"In the seven years I've been here, this is the best chemistry I've ever had," coach Jay Merrell said. "They take it one inning at a time and one game at a time. On offense it's a different guy everyday."

Kudos to the 3A folks for showing some creativity in their scheduling approach this spring.
Dayton went up to play Spring Creek, Elko and Lowry this weekend. Instead of having to make two trips, the Dayton softball and baseball teams went up Friday morning. Both squads will play the aforementioned teams and all games are scheduled for Winnemucca.
And, while we're on the subject of 3A sports, there is talk that soccer could be just one 16-team league next year, and that you would only face each team once. In this scenario, eight teams would make the playoffs.

I'd love to see the NIAA do something different when it comes to spring sports, especially baseball.
Is there a need to start the season in what is usually the dead of winter? Does the season really have to end before Memorial Day weekend? Is there a reason why you can't play into the first or second week of June?
I know the weather is the same for everybody, but I would love the idea of baseball games being played in sunshine 90 percent of the time instead of 10 percent of the time.

Times sure have changed in terms of high school swimming.
Growing up in Northern California, the home team scored a dual meet. Here in Nevada, there are paid officials who run the meet, which takes a lot of pressure off the coaches to be sure.
One thing was missing at last week's Spanish Springs-Carson dual - a scorer. Apparently the individual assigned to score the meet, which means typing up results among other things, was snowed in and couldn't make the trip.
That's why we were able to furnish just pictures and no stories the day after the meet. We received the results on Saturday,.

And, speaking of Dayton baseball, Oliver recently signed with Williston State in North Dakota.
