PREPS: Carson golf finishes third; Gingell is medalist

The Carson golf team improved more than 30 shots from last week en route to a third- place finish Tuesday at Eagle Valley West Golf Course.

The Senators shot a team score of 429 - led by medalist Garrett Gingell who shot a 76. Galena (397) won the match by one stroke over Manogue (398).

Gingell had two birdies on the back nine, including a near-ace on the par 3-13th hole. His second birdie came on the 18th.

"He had a very good round. The course is very fair but yet challenging," said coach Terry Gingell. "He played a very steady round."

Following the younger Gingell was Mitch Parra with an 85; Roman Smokey (86), Nate Brown with an 88; Mark Lacey with a 94 and Jacob Getz with a 121.

Gingell was pleased with the progress that Brown and Lacey have made.

"They have both worked quiet a bit on their games and they are seeing the rewards," he said.

Getz qualified for the Senators sixth spot by beating his teammates in practice on Monday.

Tuesday's match was moved to Eagle Valley from Arrowcreek because of snow on the course. Gingell said it was "good conditions" on the West Course.

Carson returns to action next Tuesday at Genoa Lakes, weather permitting.

SOFTBALL

DOUGLAS ROLLS

MINDEN - The Tigers chalked up their second consecutive mercy rule win, smashing Wooster 15-3 Tuesday afternoon.

Douglas broke open a 6-3 game in the fourth with nine runs.

Kalee Duryee picked up the win in the circle. He struck out three and walked three. Duryee helped herself, driving in four runs.

Aaliyah Paxson went 3-for-3 and drove in two runs. Jenna Geyer went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs with a homer. Brenna White and Katie Kluever each collected two hits.

Douglas is 4-2-2 overall and 2-1 in league.

YERINGTON TOPS DAYTON

YERINGTON - Katie Nicholas scattered three hits in pitching the Lions to a 4-1 win over Dayton. It was her second win over Dayton this season.

Makayala Shadle took the loss, striking out seven and allowing just three hits.

"She (Shadle) pitched a nice game," Dayton coach Daven Passalacqua said. "She (Nicholas) has our number."

Kelly Coombs went 2-for-2 and Kenzie Cole had one hit. Cole scored Dayton's only run on an error.

BASEBALL

DAYTON TOPS YERINGTON

YERINGTON - Logan Garling made his starting debut for the Dust Devils, and it was a good one.

Garling struck out six and allowed just three hits in going the distance in leading Dayton to its 12th straight win. Dayton, 12-0, hosts South Tahoe on Friday.

"He threw really well," Dayton coach Jay Merrell said. "He had good control of his soft stuff, and he kept them off balance. I had to get him some innings. That's why I started him today. Our starters have been going complete games and he only had one relief appearance."

Dayton took a 1-0 lead in the second when Timo Ply doubled home Jake Koch, who had singled. After Yerington tied the game in the second, Dayton took a 2-1 lead when Ply doubled home Koch, who had doubled. In the seventh, Logan Jones' infield single and Conner Oliver's bases-loaded walk accounted for the Dust Devils' final two runs.

Jones went 3-for-4, while Ply and Koch added two hits apiece.

CHS JV'S WIN

RENO - Carson rebounded from a 15-13 loss with a 13-7 win over North Valleys.

Jace Zampirro went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs, while Rafe King, Cody Schmidlin and Danny Okimura all had one hit.

Schmidlin picked up the win on the mound, allowing one run over three innings. He also struck out two batters. Gehrig Tucker struck out four in two innings of relief.
