Library news & notes: Book launch for 'Compulsion' slated

Young adult novelist Heidi Ayarbe knows Carson City. She grew up here, attended local schools and graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno, before heading out to see the world.

Heidi has an astounding ability to connect with teenagers, as is demonstrated in her third and perhaps most gripping novel, "Compulsion." Main character, 17-year-old soccer star Jake Martin, has the magic, the drive and determination to take his team to a third state championship. He also suffers from obsessive-compulsive-disorder, an illness that threatens to destroy his hopes and his future.

The Carson Library is pleased and proud to sponsor several events celebrating the publication of "Compulsion" and its community connection. Comma Coffee will host a book signing party 3:30-7 p.m. Thursday. Attendees will have the unique opportunity to meet Ayarbe, hear her discuss the writing of her novels and her love for Carson City, watch soccer demonstrations and listen to music performed by local bluegrass band, Hick'ry Switch.

Ayarbe is certainly a favorite for teenage and adult readers. Her first two novels, "Freeze Frame" and "Compromised," fly off the shelves at the public library and those at both middle and high schools. This book promises to continue the trend and will be a favorite for readers who will identify with the struggles and pressures Jake and his family encounter and who will remember Jake long after the last goal is scored and the last number sequence unraveled. There is magic to be found on these pages, for the reader and for Jake. Maori Dance Theatre on May 9

The Kahurangi Maori Dance Theater of New Zealand performs from 6-8 p.m. May 9 in the library auditorium, culminating the Community Read activities. This program highlights the aspects of life, both tangible and intangible, the Maori people hold precious and sacred. With dances, songs, cultural dress and chants, along with unbridled enthusiasm, the Maori have created interest in New Zealand and have inspired a few imitations at athletic events. Currently, tickets are unavailable, but those who are interested might stop by the library Thursday evening in case there are no-shows. Empty seats will be filled on a first come basis.

May activities

NV Legal Services continues its workshops, again focusing on the complex topic of foreclosures. Representatives will be available from 2-4 p.m. May 10.

May's Explore the World@ Your Library spotlights the beautiful country, Peru and will be held from 6-8 p.m. May 12.
