Benefit golf tournament

Silver Oak Golf Course is hosting a charity golf tournament on May 22 to raise funds for the families of those killed in the Highway 50 car crash. The girlfriend of Silver Oak General Manager Tom Unruh lost her son and both of her grandchildren in the crash. Another member of Silver Oak died leaving behind a wife and two twin baby girls.

Come to barbecue, ride the McKeen Motorcar

Members of Warren Engine Co. No. 1, volunteer fire department, will hold a barbecue during a Mother's Day event at the Nevada State Railroad Museum on Sunday.

The barbecue, which will offer cheeseburgers, hamburgers and hot dogs, will coincide with the museum's excursions aboard the newly restored 1910 Virginia and Truckee McKeen Motorcar.

The rides will run every 40 minutes from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Mother's Day riders will receive a special commemorative ticket.

Tickets are $10 for adults and children 12 years and up. The cost is $5 for children 4 years to 11, and those age 3 and under may ride without charge.

The price for Warren Engine Co. No. 1 meals is $5 each and includes chips and a drink. There also will be T-shirts and other WECO souvenirs for sale. The proceeds go toward maintenance and other costs associated with WECO's fire museum at Fire Station No.1.

Its 1927 Seagrave also will be on display to the public.

On May 7, a 1926 Edwards Motorcar will run every 30 minutes starting at 10 a.m. The cost will be $4 for adults and $2 for children 4-11. WECO also will hold a barbecue on that day.

The Railroad Museum is located on Highway 395 at Fairview Drive, and tickets for the rides may be obtained there at the Wabuska Depot.

Domestic well owners informational workshop scheduled

An informational workshop for domestic well owners will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Carson City Library, 900 N. Roop Street.

Well owners should know the construction of the well, the depth of the well and the pump, the static and pumping levels, the flow rate, water quality issues, water rights and how the pressure tank is doing.

The workshop is hosted by Nevada Water Resources Association, and there is no cost.

Learn ballroom dance starting Monday

Dance instructor Larry Ward will present several dance classes beginning in May. Ward has 55-years dance experience.

An eight-week ballroom dance class begins May 9. Classes will be 7:30-9 p.m. Mondays at the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada, 813 N. Carson St.

This class is designed to get you ready for all the social events that celebrate on the dance floor with emphasis on the cha-cha, waltz, fox trot, and east coast swing.

Cost of the class is $8 per session for adults and $6 for teens.

Practice your new moves at a night of ballroom dancing with live music by Don and Nadine 7:30-10 p.m. May 14 at Genoa Town Hall. Cost is $8 per person and includes light refreshments.

An encore dance will be held 7:30-10 p.m. Sept. 17.

Kahurangi Maori Dance Theatre of New Zealand hosted

Carson City Library will host Kahurangi, a Maori dance group from New Zealand, at 6 p.m. Monday in the library auditorium.

Kahurangi, translates into "Cloak from Heaven." The company has appeared in many festivals, conferences, public and private schools presenting unique cultural performances, demonstrations, lectures and workshops relating to the Maori and Polynesian cultures and ways of life.

A performance by Kahurangi explores the life force of the Maori through the songs and dances that are part of their history.

They bridge the past and the present with genealogical chants, martial arts techniques, powerful songs and pride in being Maori.

Learn about 'a giant step' at observatory star parties

This week's Western Nevada College, Jack C. Davis Observatory, Saturday Star Party has been scheduled.

"A Giant Step" Part One includes the first of a two-part lecture covering the beginning days of NASA and the U.S. Space Program. This lecture by Mike Thomas tells the story of the first astronauts and the Mecury, Gemini, and initial Apollo missions.

It will be at 7 p.m. Saturday, but doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Learn about the men and machines that made our country the leader in space explorations.

Part Two of this lecture event "A Giant Step" will be offered May 14. It is on America's effort to put a man on the Moon. In this presentation, Thomas addresses the epic story of the Apollo Eleven Mission, which landed Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the Moon in July, 1969. This is a don't-miss program, especially for the younger generation who may not be familiar with this historic event.

Weather permitting, there will be telescope viewing provided every Saturday evening after the lecture.

The Saturday Star Parties are free to the public.

Bark, Whine & Dine to benefit Parks 4 Paws

A Bark, Whine and Dine event to benefit Parks 4 Paws will be from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Saturday at the Fuji Park Events Center, 601 Old Clear Creek Road.

The event will be hosted by Mayor Bob Crowell with music by Link Crew CHS. Micro-brews for purchase will be by High Sierra Brewing Co. Food will be catered by Local's BBQ and Artisan's Bakery. Local merchants have contributed to the silent auction.

Arts day is May 10

Sponsored by the Nevada Arts Advocates, Arts Day provides people the opportunity on Tuesday to join a senator or assembly member during the floor session, to attend a luncheon at the Carson Nugget, meet with legislators and staff, and attend a tea at the Governor's Mansion with Nevada's first lady.

Footprinters dinner meeting set

The Carson Valley Footprinters will hold its monthly dinner meeting on May 19 at the Casino Fandango in Carson City. A no host bar starts at 6 p.m. and the meeting begins at 7 p.m.

Guest speaker will be David Lopey, Nevada's terrorism liaison officer coordinator. He will discuss Nevada's strategies related to terrorism threats.

Brewery Arts Center to host talent show

The Brewery Arts Center is looking for young people to take part in its upcoming BAC Stage Kids Talent Show to be held at 7 p.m. May 18 in the Performance Hall. The show is open to participants between the ages of 6 and 17.

Swim center in Minden celebrates 22nd anniversary

The Carson Valley Swim Center on Highway 88 in Minden will celebrate its 22nd anniversary with an open house May 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Free hot dogs will be offered from 11 a.m. until they're gone. Sodas and chips will be 25 cents each.

The day includes a full schedule of tours and demonstrations.

Pilates offered with therapy angle

Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation will offer new pilates programs taught by a rehabilitation certified pilates instructor with 10 years experience.

A new circuit session begins May 3 and meets 7-8 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursday.

Mat classes are noon and 5:30 p.m. Monday and Wednesdays. One on one training is by appointment.
