PREP ROUNDUP: Carson loses, will play at Spanish Springs in first round

RENO - Bishop Manogue scored seven runs in the first three innings, and then had to withstand a seventh-inning rally by Carson to grab a 9-6 win in the Northern 4A season finale for both teams Friday afternoon.

Carson finished the league season with a 12-8 record, and will be at Spanish Springs (13-7) when the playoffs begin on Tuesday afternoon.

"They came out and swung it, and we didn't," Carson coach Cody Farnworth said. "We battled at the end. We had a couple of miscues that were ruled hits. We just have to respond on Tuesday. The only bad thing about going there (Spanish Springs) is that short porch (in right)."

The Miners treated Carson starter Drew Moreland rudely, scoring four in the first and three more in the third for a 7-0 lead.

M.J. Farthing homered to right with one out, and Devonte German followed with a single. Sean-luke Brija followed with a three-run homer to right to make it 4-0.

In the third, German walked and DeWeese walked, and Brija followed with his second three-run homer of the game to make it 7-0.

Carson made it 7-2 in the fourth when Colby Blueberg tripled to left and scored on a single by Austin Pacheco. After Chance Quilling forced Pacheco at second, Rory Petersen singled Quilling to third. Quilling scored when Dion Copoulos hit into a force play.

Zak Harjes came on in the fourth and gave up two runs as the Miners upped their lead to 9-2.

With two outs Farthing walked and scored on German's two-run homer. Of Manogue's nine runs, eight were a result of homers.

Carson made it 9-3 in the fifth when Nick Domitrovich reached on a dropped third strike and scored on Blueberg's double to left.

The Senators made it interesting in the seventh, scoring three times. Blueberg hit a sacrifice fly, Pacheco had a run-scoring single and the third run scored on a passed ball. The game ended with Carson stranding runners at second and third.

Blueberg and Pacheco led Carson with two hits and two RBIs apiece.

DOUGLASFALLSTORENO; seventh seed

The Douglas baseball team closed out the regular season with an 11-1 loss at Reno Friday afternoon as the Huskies pushed ahead to clinch the Northern 4A league title.

The loss pushed Douglas down to the No. 7 slot with McQueen taking sixth via a tiebreaker and Damonte taking eighth.

The Tigers will travel to No. 2 seed Galena Tuesday afternoon at 3:45 p.m. for the first round of the regional playoffs.

"We got beat up pretty well and had some letdown from yesterday (a 4-3 loss to Reno in Minden)," Douglas coach Bruce Jacobsen said. "We've been on a roller coaster all year where we swing it pretty well one game and then the bats die the next.

"We got a run in the first today, but we would've need 10 or more to keep up the pace and it just wasn't there today."

Shane Fencl led the game off by reaching on an error and later came around to score on a single to right field from Matt Thomas.

That accounted for all of Douglas' scoring on the day.

Reno put together two big innings, one of five runs and one of six runs, to put the game away in five frames due to the 10-run mercy rule.

One highlight for Douglas was Jimmy King collecting his first varsity hit after sending a sharp line drive to right field in the fifth inning.

"It's a whole new game starting Tuesday," Jacobsen said. "Anyone can string together a couple good games and be in the middle of it. We like our chances. We have the pitching and if we can get those bats going, we're in good shape."

YERINGTON SWEEPS WHITE PINE

YERINGTON - The Lions closed out the regular season by sweeping White Pine 14-0 and 10-0 Friday afternoon.

In the opener, Tommy Kinsey pitched a 1-hitter. He struck out five and walked three.

Tyler Peeples went 3-for-3 and drove in four runs, while Kinsey went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs. Jarrod Adams also had three hits and he drove in two runs. Curtis Stubblefield and Mike Garner added two hits each.

In the second game, Garner also threw a 1-hitter and fanned seven. Adams went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs. Garner, Cole Aiazzi and Corbin Cliften contributed two hits each.

JC SOFTBALL

CSI SWEEPS WNC

College of Southern Idaho swept a doubleheader from Western Nevada, 12-3 and 9-1, Friday afternoon at the Edmonds Sports Complex.

The teams conclude the four-game series today at noon with a doubleheader. Admission is free.

Ashley Hall started the opener, but failed to get out of the first inning. She had hurt her finger the previous series and had trouble gripping the ball, according to coach Leah Wentworth.

Hall gave up a three-run homer in the first and WNC answered back with two in the first on a single by Niki DiSera and a homer by Jordan Thomas. CSI padded its lead with five in the second and one in the third. WNC scored its final run in the fifth on a single by Thomas and a double by Hall.

Melanie Pfeiffer and Megan Hein also hit safely for WNC.

In the second game, WNC was scoreless until the fourth inning when Ashley Gleason doubled, Hein singled, and Jamie Klopatek walked to load the bases. Pfeiffer was hit by a pitch to score WNC's only run.

Hein went 2-for-2, while Thomas and Gleason added a hit each.

Klopatek took the loss in the circle.

JV BASEBALL

CARSON ROLLS TO WIN

RENO - Cody Schmidlin struck out three and pitched a 1-hitter to lead the Senators to an easy 12-2 win over Manogue to conclude the regular season.

Carson finished 15-12 overall and 11-8 in league.

Danny Okimura, Tyler Valley and Jace Zampirro all had two hits. Valley drove in three runs while Okimura and Zampirro drove in a run apiece. Chase Blueberg doubled in a run and Nevin Elliott singled home a run. Jay Milligan and Jordan Luhrs added a hit each.
