SALT LAKE CITY - Despite a solid performance in the circle by former Carson pitcher Cassie Vondrak, Western Nevada College's softball team lost to in-state rival College of Southern Nevada, 4-1, in the opening round of the Scenic West Conference Tournament Thursday afternoon.
Western Nevada College will play Snow College in an elimination game today at 9:30 a.m.
Vondrak went the distance, scattering nine hits and striking out five whil walking three. It was one of her best, if not the best, effort at WNC.
"She threw a good game," WNC coach Leah Wentworth said. "She did her job on the mound and got the outs for the defense."
Western Nevada's problem was on offense. The Wildcats managed eight hits, but couldn't come up with timely hits and left 10 runners on base.
CSN grabbed a 4-0 lead before WNC finally scored.
Sarah Cudahy dropped down a bunt single, was sacrificed to second and scored on a double by Ashley Gleason.
Gleason led the offense with a double and single, while Cudahy, Melanie Pfeiffer, Megan Hein, Ashley Hall and Niki DiSera added a hit each.
"We simply left too many runners on base," Wentworth said. "Offensively, we didn't come up with timely hits."
