Carson City resident Emilio Vargas-Gonzales, 26, was identified as the man killed in a single-vehicle rollover south of Gardnerville early Sunday morning.
Vargas-Gonzales was thrown from the 1998 Dodge Durango he was driving after he lost control of the vehicle while northbound on Highway 395 near Courtland Lane, according to Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Chuck Allen.
The Durango's passenger was identified as Reno resident 34-year-old Francisco J. Curiel-Caro. Curiel-Caro was wearing his seatbelt.
According to the NHP, Curiel-Caro was flown to Renown Regional Medical Center by Care Flight with life-threatening injuries. Family members of both motorists were notified and briefed on Sunday afternoon. Curiel-Caro's medical condition was not available on Monday.
Troopers were dispatched to the accident at about 5:14 a.m. on Sunday.
According to the preliminary investigation, the Durango was northbound at a high rate of speed when Vargas-Gonzales allowed it to drift off the right side of the highway. He overcorrected and the vehicle entered a broadside skid, left the roadway and went 40 feet down an embankment, then rolled several times.
Vargas-Gonzales was thrown from the vehicle, and pronounced dead at the scene.
