DUI charges dominate District Court docket Monday

The following people appeared before Judge Todd Russell in Carson City District Court on Monday:

• Nick Wayne Baumgartner, 61, was sentenced to 24-60 months in prison on a charge of felony driving under the influence after a previous felony conviction. Baumgartner said he "fell off the wagon," after learning he had terminal cancer with just two years left to live. He served a previous stint in prison in 1997 for DUI.

• David Philip Gawdun, 23, was reinstated to probation on a child abuse charge. His probation was jeopardized after Gawdun was arrested in a convoluted scheme to sell marijuana so he could gather the money needed to buy stolen guns which he intended to turn into police for a reward, according to his attorney Marcie Flygare.

• Matthew Johnson, 34, pleaded guilty to escape for walking away from Stewart Conservation Camp on Feb. 18 at 1 a.m. with fellow inmate Christopher Scott. The two were only gone for 2.5 hours after corrections officers followed their footprints in the snow to a nearby casino where surveillance video showed them entering a taxi cab. The men face 12-120 months when sentenced. In a plea agreement, the Attorney General's Office agreed to ask for a sentence of 12-30 months for Johnson during his Aug. 1 sentencing. Christopher Scott also pleaded guilty and will be sentenced July 25.

• Tyler Scott Norman, 22, pleaded guilty to attempting to elude police causing property damage and in a separate incident, a charge of grand larceny of less than $2,500 for snatching an elderly casino patron's winnings. For each count Norman faces 12-60 months in prison when sentenced July 25.

• Michael Reynolds pleaded guilty to felony third-offense driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. He could be placed on diversion or receive a prison term of 12-72 months when sentenced Aug. 1.

• Theodore Lee Sanchez Jr., pleaded guilty to domestic battery with substantial bodily harm. He will be sentenced July 5.

• Thomas W. Sollinger, 52, pleaded guilty to gross misdemeanor abuse, neglect and endangerment of a child. As a condition of the plea deal, Sollinger agreed to drop appeals on two related justice court cases for domestic battery and obstructing a peace officer. He faces up to a year in jail when sentenced July 5.

• Isaiah Treuer, 33, received DUI diversion on a charge of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. If he successfully completes DUI court he will not receive a felony for the charge of third-offense DUI. Treuer said he was recently given a promotion and raise at his work and he wanted to continue to make progress in his battle against substance abuse. He must additionally serve 180 days on house arrest with an alcohol monitor. "If you get thrown out of DUI court I have no choice, (but to send you to prison)," said Russell.

• John Watts, 40, was sentenced to 26-65 months in prison on a second felony DUI charge. He was busted during a DUI checkpoint in front of Mills Park in November. Watts had a previous felony DUI conviction 12 years ago.
