SPORTS BRIEFLY: Aces win tournament

The Carson Aces, a 13-year-old Babe Ruth, topped Walker River 11-8 in the championship game on May 22.

The Aces lost two of three in pool play, but battled back to win the championship trophy.

In the title game, the Aces took an early 11-1 lead in four great innings with awesome hitting from all players in the lineup, and great defense.

Walker River didn't back down and put on a hitting show in the fourth and fifth innings and closed the deficit to 11-8. With two outs and bases loaded in bottom of the fifth, Chase McAninich made a diving catch to close the inning.

Jonathan Collins and Victor Castro were named to the all-tournament team.

Carson Sierra Youth Football will hold signups at Fuji Park from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and at Walmart on Market Street from 4 to 7 p.m. today, Thursday and Friday.

The league is open to children 6 to 14 years of age.

Twins blank

Red Sox 10-0

Tez Allen fanned 10 and walked one in four innings of work to lead the Twins past the Red Sox in Carson City Little League Major Division action.

Kyle Glanzman led the offense, going 3-for-3 with a double, two singles and an RBI. Jesse Wilcox added a single. Brandon Steel and Alec Pierson had the only hits for the Red Sox.

All-star hoops

at Manogue

A high school all-star game featuring the top senior boys and girls in Northern Nevada will be held tonight at 6 and 7:30 p.m. at Bishop Manogue High School.

Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students.

Elementary students at Bordewich-Bray in Carson City have been participating in The

First Tee's National School Program during regularly scheduled physical education classes.

To encourage the students to remain active through participation in programs of The First Tee at area golf courses, The First Tee of Northern Nevada and Silver Oak Golf Course are hosting 216 students to a morning of golf activities from 9 to 11 a.m.

For many students it will be their first visit to a golf course.

Fly fishing classes

offered in June

The Carson Fly Fishing Club will conduct a beginning fly fishing class June 6th thorough the 9th and June 13 at the Ormsby Room at the Carson City Sheriff's Office.

The course will cover equipment, casting, entomology, flies, catch and release, and knots and leaders. This is the 12th year the class has been held.

hosting summer camp

The first-ever Dayton Valley Soccer Camp is being held from July 11-15 at the Mark Twain fields.

The cost is $50. The age range is 4 to 18.

Couples golf league

starts May 31

Carson Valley Golf Club is hosting a Couples League starting May 31 at 5:30 p.m.

The cost is $30 per player which includes nine holes of golf, a shared cart, dinner and $5 prize fund.

The CVGC is also hosting the Hump Day Hackers every Wednesday starting at 1 p.m. It will run until October 26. It's open to players of all skill levels. The cost is $35 for 18 holes and $30 for nine holes.

Silsby enjoys big

day at Silver Oak

Jim Silsby shot a net 59 and had two closest-to-the-hole shots during the first round of Silver Oak's Senior Men's Club flighted stroke play.

Silsby has a nine-stroke lead over Don Fox and a 10-shot advantage over Tom Abbett in Flight 1. Dale Guy and Terry Thomas are tied for fourth with 72s.

In Flight 2, Dick Lund leads the way with a 63. John Scoville is second with a 65, verne Rosse is third at 67, and Chris Gottschalk and Gary Poley are tied fourth with 68s.

Chamber of Commerce

hosts golf tourney

The Carson City Chamber of Commerce is putting on a golf tournament on June 10 at Eagle Valley-West.

The cost is $85, which includess greens fees, cart, breakfast, lunch and a goody bag. A hole-in-one wins a car from Carson City Toyota-Scion. There are also raffle prizes and a silent auction.
