Lane, Purcell win first-team honors; Oliver Cole named 3A MVPs

When it came time for Carson High's softball team to score runs, it was veteran Moriah Lane and newcomer Jen Purcell who often stepped up with clutch hits.

Lane and Purcell were rewarded for their efforts by being named to the all-Sierra League first team. Pitcher Christina Gallegos also was named to the first team. Third baseman/DH Lisa Yamamoto, outfielder/pitcher Christa McGahuey, shortstop Emily Collins and pitcher/third baseman Lou Ashbaugh were selected to the second team. First baseman Lauren Knorzer and catcher K.C. Withrow received honorable mention honors.

Unofficially, Lane hit .400 with three homers and 11 RBI. She had a slugging prcentage of .600. Pitchers often pitched around her this year, but she still produced good numbers.

Purcell hit .492 with three homers and 16 RBIs. Of her 29 hits, eight were for extra bases. She also scored 11 runs.

Gallegos compiled a 5-2 record with a 3.52 ERA. She gave up 26 earned runs in 51 2/3 innings of work.

McGahuey, who hit three homers in one game this year, ended up with four homers and 21 RBIs en route to a .328 average. She finishd with 10 extra-base hits and scored 19 runs.

Collins hit .357 with a homer and seven RBI. She scored 18 runs and had 20 hits, and proved to be a capable table-setter for Lane, Yamamoto, Purcell and McGahuey.

Ashbaugh proved to be a solid No. 2 pitcher behind Gallegos, and coach Scott Vickrey will expect better things from her next year. Knorzer was honored for the scond consecutive year.

OLIVER, COLE WIN MVP AWARDS

Dayton's Conner Oliver and Kenzie Cole were named the MVP's for the Lahontan League in a vote of coaches.

Cole hit .443 with two homers and 26 RBI. She compiled a 9-4 record with a save and a 1.38 ERA. She was often the victim of a lack of defensive support.

Oliver hit a team-best .500 with four homers and 28 RBI. He won eight games and had two saves en route to a 2.07 ERA. He finished with 94 strikeouts.

Both Oliver and Cole were first-team all-state selections.

Gemma Ramirez and Makayla Shadle were second-team selections, while Cheyanna Burrows and Kelly Combs were honorable mention picks.

Ramirez hit .333 with six RBIs, while Shadle went 6-3 with a 1.96 ERA. Burrows hit .344 with 12 RBIs, while Combs hit .310.

Houston Berntson was a first-team selection at pitcher after compiling a 5-2 record with a 1.44 ERA.

Tim Ply was named a second-team pitcher and Logan Garling was the scond-team DH/utility player. Ply went 5-1 with a 2.13 ERA, while Garling hit .390 with four homers and 18 RBIs. Jake Koch also was named to the second team. He hit .314 with a team-leading five homers.

Yerington had four players on the first team - catcher Jarrod Adams, infielder Cole Aiazzi, outfielder Tommy Kinsey and pitcher Mike Garner.

Yerington coach Stephen Schreiberis was named Coach of the Year.
