Mono Lake: The Bodie Free Press publishes the following description of this remarkable body of water. The lake is 29 x 19 miles in diameter and more than 200 feet deep, has several small tufa islands, one 2,200 acres and the second 1,500 acres. The second island is the crater of a volcano that was in active eruption as late as 1858, and from the larger island out 100 feet and 70 feet deep are boiling springs of asphalt.
