Idaho State junior Mike Arnold, a Carson High graduate, has advanced to the next round of the pole vault in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship with his third-place finish in the first round at Eugene, Oregon last weekend.

Arnold will travel to Des Moines, Iowa June 8-11 at Drake Stadium to compete in the final round.

Arnold cleared a height of 17-0 3/4 for third place. Brigham Young's Chris Little and Victor Weirich tied for first place in the event with the same height. This is the first time Arnold has advanced to the final rounds of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship.

"Mike did a fantastic job given the poor weather conditions," ISU head coach Dave Nielsen said. "His initial height to get in was not that impressive because of the weather but he did a really excellent job competing."

Kentucky signs

two WNC pitchers

Chris Garrison and Tim Peterson, Western Nevada College pitchers, have signed national letters of intent to attend the University of Kentucky.

Garrison, a bounce back from the University of Oregon, compiled an 8-1 record for WNC. Paterson, also a sophomore, compiled an 8-4 record.

The duo follows former WNC star Lance Ray, who played one year for Kentucky before signing a professional contract with Minnesota.

"I'm thrilled for the guys to follow in Lance's footsteps at Kentucky," WNC coach D.J. Whittemore said. "In addition to what they did on the mound, they played key leadership roles for our team. It feels good to have them rewarded with scholarships."
