Raley's halves charity food bags

Raley's grocery stores will double customer's charitable giving by selling bags of food valued at $20 at half price to benefit local food banks.

Its Food for Families holiday program will run through Dec. 31 and be available at every Raley's location. The Carson City location is at 3701 S. Carson St. Last year, Raley's customers and employees donated more than 2.7 million pounds of food.

"We've seen a 30-35 percent increase in the need for food assistance in the past year alone," said John Healey, president and CEO of California Emergency Foodlink, in a statement. "One-third of all the food that we receive is from Food For Families - we wouldn't be able to feed the hungry without this program."

Local donations will go to Friends in Service Helping.

Steakhouse to open in Gardnerville

Tenderloin "Steak & Potatoes" Family Restaurant is set to open in the Gardnerville Scolari's Shopping Center on Dec. 7.

In a press release, MTL Management, the owner corporation, wrote that the restaurant will be a family-oriented steakhouse.

"There will be no fancy tables cloths, no wait people in tuxedos, and no $50 plates - just great food, great quality, great service and extremely fair prices," the company wrote.

Meals will include a soup or salad, meat from Craig and Hamilton Fine Meats, fresh-made potatoes and steamed vegetables and rolls with butter. Friday will also offer sauteed salmon "with all the trimmings" for about $17.

Once open, it will operate 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Thursday.
