Senator Square: Students return with honor

Above the doors of all of our exits is a saying, "Return with Honor," a reminder to our students and staff that when you leave our halls, you are a representative of Carson High School.

Every day, staff and students at CHS are making a name for our school, one that we can be proud of both academically and athletically. While I know sports stories are reserved for the sports section, I have a perspective to share.

Professional athletes dream of making the play that will win a game. Children watching these players idolize them and their accomplishments.

Kids in our town don't have to look to the professionals anymore.

Right here in our town, a local kid has made a play that not only won the game, but also broke the NFL record for the longest field goal. Austin Pacheco of our Carson Senator football team kicked a 64-yard field goal with 27 seconds left on the clock to give CHS a win over Bishop Manogue.

Winning a game with a 64-yard field goal would be a dream come true for any kid. Youngsters in our town now have a local hero to idolize instead of a professional. Oh, and now NFL players also have someone to admire.

Congrats to Austin and his teammates for an amazing win. The win puts our football team in a tie for first place in league. In addition to football, all of sports teams are representing CHS with honor.

Boys tennis starts regional playoff tournaments this week. As part of the Sierra League, our girls varsity soccer is currently second, girls varsity volleyball sits third, boys soccer is in first place, girls varsity cross country is in first, and boys varsity cross country is in third.

Thank you to all of our sports team for playing your hardest, representing CHS admirably, and "returning with honor" to our halls!

CHS NJROTC CADETS ATTEND TRAINING

The Carson High NJROTC will conduct its annual Basic Leadership Training at the Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Center Wednesday through Friday.

Marine instructors will introduce to cadets what they might experience during basic training, should they decide to enlist in our military forces.

Cadets will experience 5 a.m. reveille, three meals a day, no snacks, no entertainment and to bed at 10 p.m. During the day, cadets will conduct physical fitness training, drill, inspections and classes on military history and military etiquette.

New cadets will be mentored by returning cadets, who are assigned to leadership positions, in order to further develop their leadership skills.

Cadets who have asked to participate will be awarded the Basic Leadership ribbon to be worn on their uniform. This ribbon signifies that they have successfully completed this vigorous three day training course.

About 75 CHS cadets will be attending this leadership training. Good luck cadets.

CHS JUMPING

JACK RECORD

CHS will participate in the attempt to break the Guinness Book of World Record for the most jumping jacks performed in a 24-hour period of time at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday. CHS staff and students will be encouraged to participate in this effort of doing one minute of jumping jacks.

COSTUME DRIVE

Do you have old Halloween costumes lying around or do you need a costume for this Halloween? Carson HOSA and Pioneer High School have joined together with www.freecostumesforkids.org to do a Halloween Costume drive to get costumes for kids in need.

New or gently used costumes can be donated Oct. 3-19 at the CHS office, Pioneer High School, The Spirit Store, It's a Girl Thang and at Friday's football game.

Donations should be in a plastic bag and labeled with gender and size. If you are in need of a costume, distribution will be noon-4 p.m. Oct. 22 in the CHS foyer and 2-4 p.m. Oct. 24-27 at Pioneer High School room B3.

CHS STAFF PERFORMS LIVE THEATER

Carson High Theatre Arts teacher Karen Chandler will be performing in "On Golden Pond" for the Carson Valley Theatre Company two weekends beginning Oct. 14. For information, call (775) 292-0939 or carsonvalleycommunitytheatre.org.

English and French instructor Sharon Miller will be performing as part of the ensemble in Western Nevada Musical Theater Company's "The Phantom of the Opera" the first three weekends in November at the Carson Community Center.

GOVERNMENT STUDENTS MEET GOVERNOR

Government students attended the unveiling of SB 140 this past week at the Capitol. The new law, which went into effect Oct. 1, requires that drivers will not be allowed to use a cell phone while driving, which includes calling or texting. Besides seeing government in action, students were also then greeted by Gov. Brian Sandoval who presented each student with his specially minted coin.

NHS HOLDS BLOOD DRIVE

National Honors Society is hosting a blood drive 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Oct. 13 in the small gym.

Snacks and free T-shirt will be provided. A free cholesterol test is available with each donation.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

This week's senior spotlight is on McKenzie Comba. McKenzie has a weighted grade-point average of 4.5 and is a competitive dancer.

She is a part of Link Crew and National Honor Society at CHS. She plans to attend either University of Montana or Northern Arizona University and major in "whatever my heart decides."

Carson High is proud of McKenzie and her contributions and dedication to our school.
