A fundraiser is planned to help Dayton teen Devree Hamblin receive the surgery she needs to correct the facial paralysis she was left with after the removal of a malignant brain tumor in 2009.

"It is our hope to see this beautiful young girl have the smile she so deserves," said Deborah White, who works with Deveree's father, Todd, at the Department of Motor Vehicles.

The co-workers are seeking donations for a rummage and craft sale Oct. 22 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church.

White said she wanted to organize the fundraiser because she noticed they were often held to help family's after a tragic event.

"It's a positive thing," she said. "So often we can't fix things. This is something that can be fixed. That kind of touches me."

Devree, 17, will need to undergo at least two surgeries beginning next month to make her face symmetrical and to give her the ability to smile.

Even so, White said, Devree is outgoing and positive, participating in drama and choir class.

"This young woman is amazing," White said. "She's just is very special. She deserves this."
