Rescued cats available for adoption

A total of 26 cats rescued from a Virginia City home are now ready for adoption at a temporary shelter in the basement of Silverland Inn and Suites in Virginia City.

"These kitties desperately need new homes. Many are shy and will need a patient person whom they can learn to trust, but there are also several that are already confident and playful. We are encouraging people to come adopt these kitties and give them a second chance in a new, loving home," Kimberly Chandler, a member of the Nevada Humane Society rescue team, said in a news release.

The cats were rescued by Nevada Humane Society after owner Rick Hoover died Oct. 3, leaving the cats to fend for themselves in his cluttered home.

Each cat has since been spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped, and has received any needed veterinary care at Nevada Humane Society's Clinic in Reno.

The temporary adoption center is in the basement at Silverland Inn and Suites, 100 N. E Street, Virginia City.

Adoption hours are noon to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Each cat is available for a "Pick Your Own Price" adoption fee, and the Nevada Humane Society will provide veterinary care for up to two weeks after an adoption.

Volunteers are also needed to help care for the cats while they are in Virginia City. Volunteers with Red Rover, a national animal rescue group, have been caring for the cats in the temporary center, but their time is up on Wednesday.

"It is critical that we find volunteers who are able to help socialize and care for these cats while they wait for a new home," said Chandler.
