Drozdoff, Shonnard run well for Carson

GARDNERVILLE - Alex Drozdoff and April Shonnard were in mid-season form at Friday's Class Races held at Lampe Park.

In the class-race format, boys and girls run together in the same race based on the year in school. No team scores are kept.

Drozdoff was the second girl finisher in the sophomore cross country race on the 2.5-mile flat layout. Teammate Cindy Juchtzer was 45th overall and the fifth girl finisher. Tylar Chester led the sophomore boys with a 22nd (15:59), Dom Kinder was 23rd (16:04.4) and Anthony Cacioppo was 27th (16:17.7).

"This was a good first race for Alex," coach Pete Sinnott said. "We didn't lighten up for this. We've been training hard."

The senior race was all about the Shonnard family. April Shonnard was the first girl finisher overall, clocking a 15:31. Michael Shonnard was Carson's top senior boy runner and fifth overall IN 14:19. Erika Sosa placed 82nd overall out of 147 runners.

"April ran a nice race," Sinnott said. "She was chasing down a lot of boys today. This is Michael's first year of competition. He's starting to get stronger."

Sinnott was pleased with his junior class, too. The group put together several good performances.

Taylor Bradshaw finished third overall in 14:03, while Nick Greene was ninth in 14:51 and Chris Merriner was 14th in 15:15. On the girls' side, Mallory Wilson (17:30.5) was fifth among the girls and 49th overall, while Avery Hudak was 75th overall IN 18:53.3.

Shelby Brown and Daniel Jauregui led the Senators' freshman contingent. Brown was 10th among the girls (19:33) and 47th overall, while Jauregui (15:58) was seventh overall.

Dayton boys place 2nd

SILVER SPRINGS - Dayton High's boys cross-country team placed second at the Silver Stage Invitational today.

Joe Law led the Dayton contingent with a sixth-place finish in 20-minutes and 30-seconds. Skyler Rose was seventh in 20:38, Jamie Woods 10th in 21:50, Nick Langstaff 17th in 22:22 and Phillip Hevener 25th in 24:42.

"I think it will go like this most of the season with my top boys finishing within a minute of each other," coach Shawn Anderson said. "Aaron Elissa was not there today but he would have finished with Joe and Skyler. "This was Joe, Nick and Phillip's first high school cross country race. This was Phillip's first race ever. One of Nick's goals is to be able to run with my top four boys by the end of the season. He is well on his way."

Fernley won the meet. Logan Woodward from Fernley was first in 18:31.

Dayton's team was incomplete in the girls' race. Kaia Galloway was third in 29:25. Fernley's Hannah Shrock won in 24:54.

Dayton soccer swept

FALLON - The Dayton soccer teams took its lumps on Friday at the 3A/2A tournament at the Edward Arciniega Complex on Friday.

The girls fell to Fernley, 4-0, and to Spring Creek, 4-1, while the boys lost 9-1 and 5-1 to Fernley and Spring Creek, respectively.

Like most teams at the tournament, Dayton girls coach Jared Miklich and boys coach Karl Watts played around with their lineups. The reasoning is to find what combinations will work best and to gauge what areas of play need fine tuning.

Miklich's club, like the boys, is young and inexperienced so these early season matches are to teach the girls fundamentals and positioning. With only four seniors, Miklich geared his team up for the physical style of play they will encounter throughout the season.

"I think this was a good learning experience for everybody," he said. "My whole goal for the Spring Creek game was don't get down, keep fighting for the ball. I was real happy with them."

However, for Watts he said the boys' program is in a rebuilding stage and what he wanted, and saw from the Dust Devils was improvement from the first game to the second. While the Dust Devils took their lumps against the Vaqueros, Watts' club rebounded in the second match against Spring Creek.

Leo Rodriguez netted the first goal against the Spartans, but Dayton was unable to hold off Spring Creek in the second half.

"Some of those goals were at the end of the half when we were kind of losing hope," Watts said. "We're teaching the kids don't be fragile. We are in a position where it's an uphill battle, so don't give up."

The boys and girls play today at 8 a.m. against Battle Mountain and wrap up the tournament at 3:30 p.m. against Lowry.

Carson freshmen lose

INCLINE VILLAGE - Carson High's freshman football team dropped an 8-6 decision to Battle Mountain Friday afternoon.

Carson's only score came on an 80-yard kickoff return by Colby Brown late in the second quarter.

Coach Billy McHenry praised the defensive play of Brown, Nolan Shine and Brady Rivera.

Dayton spikers go 3-1

WINNEMUCCA - Dayton's volleyball team posted a 3-1 record at the Lowry Invitational Friday afternoon.

Dayton beat Spring Creek and Middleton of Idaho in three games and Battle Mountain in two games. The only loss was a two-set defeat at the hands of Fallon.

"The last game we played up to our level," said Monica Halverson, Dayton head coach. "We had good teamwork and communication."

Halverson praised the play of Tarynn Schriner and Madison Foley.

Dayton faces Fernley today at 9 a.m.
