MINDEN - The Douglas boys' soccer team battled to a hard-fought 1-1 tie against Manogue Wednesday afternoon.
While the game ended with a the scoreboard deadlocked, Douglas dominated every facet of the game, out-shooting the Miners 24-9 and stringing together 10 strong scoring opportunities to Manogue's two or three.
"I've said all along, if we weren't winning and we weren't getting the scoring opportunities, then I'd be worried," Douglas coach Vince Brown said. "But we are getting the opportunities, and we are playing well, like we did today.
"It's just a matter of figuring out how to finish those off now. That's something that will come with time."
Manogue got on the board with a goal in the sixth minute on a tricky far post shot from the left wing.
The Tiger defense turned away the Miner attack for the majority of the remainder of the game, allowing only three second-half shots and only one or two more solid scoring opportunities.
Douglas controlled time of possession throughout, thanks to strong play from midfielders Audrick Anderson and Jake Passas.
Douglas had a number of strong scoring chances through the remainder of the first half, including two breakaways that led to one-on-one chances.
The Tigers weren't able to knot the score, though, until Manogue was called for a foul in the penalty box on a Douglas corner kick in the 66th minute.
Jake Passas was awarded the penalty kick and he beat the Miner keeper to the left side of the net.
Douglas nearly scored the go-ahead after gaining possession on Manogue's ensuing kickoff.
The Tigers charged straight downfield, getting the ball again to Passas, who sent a shot just wide of the left post.
Just a minute later, Douglas' Jaden Mustacchio had the Miner keeper beat to his left, but the shot trickled just wide to the right.
"There were a lot of positive things happening out there," Brown said. "There were a lot of things we can build on. The important thing is for the kids to stay positive and see the improvement they are making."
Douglas keeper Francisco Sanchez made six saves in the tie.
