SOFTBALL: WNC records sweep

The Western Nevada College Wildcats swept Colorado Northwestern, 5-0 and 8-0, in a Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader at Edmonds Park Friday afternoon.

The teams meet today in a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. at Edmonds.

"They brought an all-around solid effort, and defensively made some good plays," coach Leah Wentworth said of her team. "They carried the intensity from start to finish. We'll be looking to finish the series with that same intensity."

WNC took a quick 2-0 lead in the first when Jenny Quam singled, stole second and scored on a double by Ali Lostra. Niki DiSera singled home Lostra.

In the bottom of the third, Melanie Pfeiffer reached on a bunt, Lostra singled and both advanced on a passed ball. Pfeiffer scored on a sacrifice by DiSera to make it 3-0. In the fourth, Tori Crowell singled, Quam reached on an error and Pfeiffer walked to load the bases. A pop-up by Taleas Marble left the runners stranded.

After a scoreless fifth, Lexi Alley led off the sixth with a single and advanced on a passed ball. Jordan Thomas singled and promptly stole second. A sacrifice by Crowell scored Alley. Thomas scored on a passed ball for a 5-0 lead.

In the final inning, Alley returned to the circle. After a hit by CNCC's Andria Walker, Alley struck out the next batter, and the inning came to close with a double play by the WNC.

In the bottom of the second of the second game, the Wildcats took advantage of Spartan errors to score four unearned runs.

With two outs, DiSera singled, Garcia reached on an error and Thomas singled. Crowell reached by fielder's choice, scoring DiSera. Quam followed with a two-run triple and Melanie Pfeiffer followed with a run-scoring double.

In the bottom of the fourth, Thomas singled and Crowell walked. The runners advanced on a passed ball, but were left stranded.

Marble led off the fifth with a solo homerun to make it 5-0. Lostra reached second on an error and scored on a single by DiSera for a 6-0 lead.

Katirina Rand singled and Thomas bunted home DiSera for a 7-0 advantage. Pfeiffer ended the game with a walk-off single for an 8-0 win.
