PREPS: Lopez's hit beats Spanish Springs

MINDEN - After getting swept by McQueen and splitting with previously winless Wooster, the Douglas High baseball team found itself at a crossroads heading into its series with Spanish Springs.

The Tigers picked up a 3-0 win in Sparks Thursday and then capped off its first sweep of the year with a 5-4 extra-inning win over the Cougars on Saturday.

Sophomore Dillon Lopez belted a walk-off single just past the outstretched glove of diving Spanish Springs left fielder Shannon Kelly to clinch the win for the Tigers in the bottom of the eighth.

"It was a good battle for eight innings," Douglas coach Bruce Jacobsen said. "It's a game where both teams are battling for wins and for us to get our first sweep of the season there was huge."

Douglas (5-5 Northern 4A) had runners on first and second with no outs in the bottom of the eighth, thanks to singles from Nolan Weintz and Dusty Fisher.

An attempted sacrifice bunt went awry, though, as Spanish Springs first baseman Lucas Jones charged toward the plate and caught the bunt in the air. He was able to double-up Fisher at first, leaving Douglas with Weintz on second and two outs.

Lopez, though, calmly stepped to the plate and slugged the game-winner on a 2-1 pitch.

"We were excited to have Dillon up right there," Jacobsen said. "He's been clutch for us all season. Ideally, we get the bunt down and have guys on second and third with one out and all he has to do is hit a fly ball. But he still came through. The kid almost caught the ball out there, it was real close. We needed the hit and Dillon got it for us. It was big for him and big for us."

Jackson Ketron, who took over on the mound to end the fifth, belted a two-out triple in the bottom half, bringing Dalton Grisell around with the tying run.

Ketron earned the win on the mound, throwing three scoreless innings while striking out three and walking two. Senior Cody Begovich pitched the front end of the game, striking out four and walking three.

Kaleb Foster and Weintz each collected two runs, Cauley (2), Lopez and Ketron had RBIs and Trebotich, Foster, Weintz (2) and Grisell scored the runs.

Carson shines in Stockton

STOCKTON, Calif. - Carson High enjoyed a big day at teh Delta Mustang Invitational at Delta Junior College on Saturday.

On the girls side, Alex Drozdoff won the 1600 (5:37) and the 3200 (12:08), while Kaitlyn Holmes won the 400 meters (63.26). The 1600-meter team of Holmes, Drozdoff, Rebecca Matley and Elena Thurman clocked a 4:23 to win the event. Maddi Saarem set a school record and a PR in the pole vault with a 10-7 effort.

Thurman was third in the 100 (13.3), fourth in the 200 (27.68) and triple-jumped 33-3 to win that event. Tiana McAllister-Daggs was third in the shot (33-3), while Erika Sosa was second in the 1600 (5:41) and third in the 3200 (12:40). Cindy Juchtzer was fourth in the 3200 (13:09) and Matley was third in the 300 hurdles at 51.1. Mikayla Story was second in the pole vault at 8-6.

On the boys side, Taylor Bradshaw won the 800 in 2:00.25 and was second in the 200 at 23.9. Corey Reid won the high jump at 6-2 and the 400 in 52.17. Cody Baker won the 300 hurdles in 44.24 and was fourth in the high jump at 5-10. Nathan Hazard was first in the shot put at 43-8 and first in the discus at 129-9 1/2. Chance Quilling was second in the triple jump at 43-9

Patrick Cooke was second in the discus at 127-11 and fourth in the shot at 40-9. The 400 relay team of Clint Page, Quilling, Anthony Estrada and Baker took second in 45.3. The 1600 team of Page, Reid, Quilling and Baker clocked a 3:41.8. Page was second in the 400 at 53.4.

In frosh-soph girls competition, Savannah Smith won the triple jump at 32-0 1/2, while Teresa Boehmer won the shot put at 29 feet.

In frosh-soph boys competition, Stefan Sobkiewicz won the 100 in 12.31 and the long jump with a leap of 18-3. He was third in the 110 high hurdles with an 18.1. Jesse Knight won the discus with a toss of 118-5 and Josue Orozco was second at 91-5. Tony Cacioppo won the 3200 in 11:35. Aaron Woodbury won the triple jump in 37-8 3/4 and took third in the long jump at 17-10. Bryen Holloway was second in the 3200 at 11:45.

Dayton girls win Fernley title

FERNLEY - Dayton High's girls track squad outscored McQueen 154-139 to win the championship at the Fernley Invitational.

McQueen won the boys title with 147. Dayton was sixth with 74.

The Dayton girls had four individual winners - Katrina Breithaupt (800, 2:30.46), D.J. Ply (pole vault. 8-0), Madison Foley (high jump, 4-10 and triple jump, 31-6) and Ashley Vickers (long jump, 14-8 1/2. The 800 relay team of Lettie Lynch, Kelsie Torres, Foley and Rybecca Fletcher won in 1:56.28.

Breithaupt was second in the 1600 (5:31.42), while Lynch was third in the 100 (13.71) and second in the 200 . Foley was third in the 100 hurdles at 18.39, while Cheyenne Strong was third in the 300 hurdles at 53.5 and fourth in the 100 hurdles at 18.45. She was second in the long jump at 13-9 and fourth in the high jump at 4-6. Vickers was third in the triple jump (29-0). Alyse Fletcher was third in the long jump at 13-7. The 400 relay squad was second in 54.81.

Tylor Bard won the boys high jump at 6-2. Cameron McGifford was third in the 110 hurdles (17.31) and third in the 300 hurdles (43.93). Jesse Evans was fourth in the triple jump at 36-8, while Joshua Koch was fourth in the discu (122-6) and fourth in the shot (42-1). Ben Woods was fifth in the 800 at 2:20.18.

SOFTBALL

Douglas sweeps Wooster

MINDEN - The Tigers improved to 4-6 in league with a doubleheader sweep of Wooster, 16-1 and 11-6.

Douglas scored seven in the first, four in the second and five in the third to chalk up an easy win. Kalee Duryee went the full five innings, allowing four hits and striking out three. She helped her cause, going 3-for-4 with three RBI.

Madison Parks went 3-for-3 and drove in four runs, Illiana Brown went 2-for-3 with three RBI, Taylor McKinnon drove in two runs and Leonna Mortimer contributed two hits.

In the second game, the Tigers broke open a tight 3-2 game with four in the fourth and three more in the third.

Kelly Sonnemann went 3-for-3, while Brown went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Jenna Geyer and Katie Kluever contributed two hits.

Morttimer worked the first four innings in the circle to get the win. he struck out one and walked one.
