Democratic women to meet

The Carson City Democratic Women's Club will meet from 11:15-11:45 Saturday at Grandma Hatties to order off the menu for lunch.

At noon, the speaker will be Chris Jones from NV Energy to explain Smart Meters. The club also expect some candidates to briefly address members.

The fashion show will be discussed as well as plans for having a series of forums, a possible ERA/History event and a Women's Rights Rally.

Wak/run for sexual assault awareness

Nationally, April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and the Sexual Assault Response Advocates, or SARA, in conjunction with Advocates to End Domestic Violence, will be host an inaugural Sexual Assault Awareness Month Walk/Run.

This event will take place at 8 a.m. Saturday with check-in and late registration at 7 a.m.

The SARA team consists of volunteers and paid staff that advocate for a victim from the time the assault is reported, through the forensic assault exam, and any court proceedings.

Team members provide referrals for financial assistance as well as counseling. The team works in conjunction with the Carson City Sheriff's Office, Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare, Jim Pagels SART/CARES Facility, Carson City Health and Human Services, and the state's Victim's of Crime office to assist victims.

Attract birds to your garden

Elona Lathrop of Greenhouse Garden Center will give a free seminar, "Attracting Birds To Your Yard," at 11 a.m. Sunday at 2450 S. Curry St.

Lathrop is a local birder who has been counting and observing birds in Northern Nevada for several years. Her knowledge in bird identification and habits will be interesting to all gardeners who enjoy attracting birds into their yards. No reservations are required.

Paslov is guest speaker at chamber luncheon

The Carson City Chamber of Commerce's next luncheon speaker series, Soup's On, will start at 11:30 a.m. April 24 at Gold Dust West. Guest speaker will be Nevada Appeal columnist and former state superintendent of schools Eugene Paslov. Chamber Director Ronni Hannaman called Paslov "a rascal" who promises to deliver an interesting program.

'Dreams & Magic' handbell concert set at library

The Tintabulations Handbell Choir will return to the Carson City Library at 11 a.m. April 28.

The "Dreams & Magic" handbell concert will include a variety of music to go along with the upcoming summer reading program theme, "Dream Big, Read!" including nocturnal motifs and several well-known pieces from Disney movies. The free performance will be held in the library's auditorium. All ages are welcome.

Ladies Nite Out coming in May

Women are invited to join Soroptimist International of the Comstock for the third annual Ladies Nite Out. Doors open at 4 p.m. May 12 at Dayton Valley Country Club, 51 Palmer Drive. Artists will sell custom jewelry, glass art, pottery, hand-woven baskets and other unique items. Tickets include one raffle ticket, appetizers and a drink. Gold Star Families to meet

In partnership with the Genoa Cowboy Poetry and Music Festival, the Carson Valley Arts Council has coordinated exhibitions of Western art that will are being displayed in businesses along and near the Highway 395 corridor in Minden and Gardnerville this month.

Bonanza Kennel Club to meet May 1

The monthly meeting of the Bonanza Kennel Club of Carson City will be at 7 p.m. May 1 in the Bonanza Room of the Community Center, 851 E. William St. The meeting is open to all dog fanciers. The club has a special interest in purebred dogs, dog shows and responsible dog ownership. Vietnam Veterans offer spring social

The Carson Area Chapter of the Vietnam Veterans will host its annual Spring Social and Raffle from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. May 3 at High Sierra Brewing Company, 302 N. Carson St. A business meeting starts at 5:30 p.m. The event offers free appetizers, live entertainment and a free first drink. Tickets are $10 at the door, and Vietnam veterans are admitted free.

Carson Tennis Club, a public sports organization, is accepting membership applications now. Join before June 1 and get a $5 discount over the regular cost.
