PREP-JC: Carson track teams second at High Desert meet

SPARKS - Carson High's track teams finished second at Friday's High Desert Invitational at Reed High School.

The girls lost 127-126 to Wooster, while Reed outpointed the Carson boys 171.5 to 161.5.

Clint Page was a doubl winner for the Carson boys, taking the 200 (23.4) and the 400 (53.51). Dakota Baker won the 110 high hurdles (16.68) and took third in the 300 hurdles (43.52). Chance Quilling won the 300 hurdles in 41.94 despite hitting two hurdles, while Corey Reid won the high jump with a mark of 6 feet. Nathan Hazard placed second in the discus at 134-5 and third in the hot put with a heave of 45-5 3/4. Taylor Bradshaw was second in the mile (4:59.56) with Dexter Cummings placing second in the 800 (2:08.29). Aaron Woodbury was second in the triple jump at 38-1.

On the girls side, Erika Valenzuela (discus), Rebecca Matley (300 hurdles) and Teresa Boehmer (shot) were the only individual winners. Valenzuela won the discus with a throw of 95-1, Matley won her race in 50.55 and Boehmer won the shot with a mark of 29-5 1/2. Matley was second in the 800 in 2:40.08.

Erika Sosa was third in the 1600 (5:56.98) and fourth in the 3200 (12:49.87). Kayla Aikins was second in the 400 (66:05), while Elena Thurman was second in the triple jump at 31-9. Madison Preston was third in the long jump at 15-7 and third in the triple jump at 31-8.

Carson won the 800 and 1600-meter relay events.

WNC records sweep

TWIN FALLS, Idaho - The Western Nevada College baseball team's pitching carried the Wildcats to a doubleheader sweep of College of Southern Idaho of Friday.

WNC won the first game 7-3 and took the second game 6-0.

In the second game, hits and runs were hard to come by. CSI's Andrew Freter and WNC's Derrick Pitts gave up only seven hits in 13.1 innings combined.

WNC was able to score two runs in the eighth inning and tagged on four in the ninth.

Bobby Pappin started the WNC rally in the eighth as he walked, stole second and scored on Rayne Raven's double. Raven had just entered in the game for the Wildcats. Dillon Ness reached on error that allowed Raven to move to third. Neil Lawhorn squeezed home Raven for the 2-0 lead.

In the ninth, Chris Woolley lead off with a single. He was sacrificed to second by Taylor Smart. After Pitts walked, Zach Hendrix singled home Woolley. Pappin then walked to load the bases. Pitts scored when AJ Hernandez reached on an error. Lawhorn then capped the scoring with a two-run single.

Pitts pitched seven strong innings, striking out five and giving up three hits.

The teams meet again today for a doubleheader.

JC SOFTBALL

Wildcats swept by CSN

The Western Nevada College softball team will look to rally today after a dropping the first two games of a four-game series against in-state rival College of Southern Nevada.

In the first game of Friday's doubleheader at Edmonds Sports Complex, WNC led early, but lost 10-3. In game two, CSN blanked WNC 7-0.

In the opener, WNC took a 3-0 lead. Mikaela Henshaw started the inning with a walk, Jenny Quam singled and then Melanie Pfeiffer knocked in Henshaw. Jordan Thomas' single plated Quam and Pfeiffer.

WNC brought in Jordan Garcia, who had relieved Alexia Alley, in the top of the sixth. Garcia allowed two runs to even that game before Alley returned in the middle of a basesloaded jam. CSN collected three straight hits to take a 7-3 lead.

In game two, Ali Lostra was the starting pitcher for WNC. CSN got on the board in the third for a 1-0 lead. In the fifth, the Coyotes added three runs for the 4-0 lead. The Coyotes added three more to finish the scoring.

"We need to do a better job of taking the momentum back when there is a shift against us," said coach Leah Wentworth said. "We need to make adjustments at the plate, and we have to answer back stronger."

The teams square off today for another doubleheader. Games are at noon and 2 p.m. at Edmonds Sports Complex. WNC sophomores will be recognized in-between games, and after the series, two seniors from Churchill County High School will sign letters of intent to play for the Wildcats in 2013.
