COMMUNITY SPORTS: WildCats grab third title of summer schedule

The WildCats won the Nevada Softball Association 18U A division championship over the weekend in Sparks.

The WildCats beat Nevada Neon, 17-2, in their opening game and then blanked the Reno Blackjacks, 8-0, in the championship game.

Lauren Knorzer and Rebecca McConnell contributed home runs in the victory over the Reno Blackjacks. The WildCats' pitching was just as impressive, allowing only two runs and six hits all day. Cara McCarthy the winning pitcher in the opener, allowing no runs and no hits before being relieved by Jennifer Quam. Ivette Garcia won the title game by pitching a 4-hitter.

Here are the WildCats' top hitters:

• Quam, 6-for-8, six runs; McCarthy, 5-for-9, six runs; Knorzer, 4-for-11, eight runs; Kelsie Callahan, 8-for -12, eight runs; Valerie Quam 8-for-10, seven runs; and McConnell, 5-for-10, four runs.

Carson High football

kick-off Dinner set

The annual Carson High Kick-off Dinner is set for Aug. 11 at 5:30 p.m. in the Nugget parking lot at the corner of Carson and Robinson streets.

Tickets are $25.

There will be food, music, raffle prizes, silent auction and the announcement of the newest members of the Hall of Fame.

SkillsUSA holding

seating fundraiser

SkillsUSA is holding a raffle-ticket fundraiser for comfort seating at all home football games this season.

Tickets are $10 each or three for $20. The weekly winner gets free admission for two, a CHS baseball hat and more, and free food from the concession stand.

The drawings will be for every varsity football game and three freshman/JV games. The drawings will be the day before each game at 4 p.m., and winners will be notified by a phone call.

Tennis camp set

for Centennial Park

The final tennis camp of the summer is set for Aug. 13-16 at Centennial Park.

Ages 4-6 will start at 8:30 a.m. and run for 30 minutes. Ages 7-13 will start at 9 a.m. The cost for 4- to 6-year-olds will be $30 for the week, while the older group will be $55 for the week.

Conditioning slated for Carson tennis

A conditioning and hitting session for all levels of high school-age students is Aug. 10 at 10 a.m. at Carson High.

Tryouts start Monday, Aug. 13, at 2:30 p.m.

Three golfers make

aces at area courses

Two local golfers and one golfer from California recorded aces recently.

Carson City's Jake Johnson used a 9-iron to ace the 146-yard par-3 12th at Silver Oak. Peter Savage, Tom Abbott and Maggie Abbott witnessed the shot.

Richard Hawkins, also of Carson City, aced the par-3 7th at Eagle Valley-West using a pitching wedge. It was his first-ever ace.

Henry Meliu of San Jose recorded his third career hole-in-one when he used a 6-iron to ace the par-3 13th at Eagle Valley West.

The shot was witnessed by Jerry Nakashima, Kaz Tamekuni and Noel Folsom.

Ford, Cote win

Silver Oak seniors

Paul Ford and Paul Cote shot a net 47 to win the Silver Oak Senior Men's Club event held at Lakeridge Golf Club.

Larry Hamann and Lew Dodgion were second with a 54, while the teams of Dick Green and Jim Zewan, and Tona Smith and Steve Alcalay tied for third with 56s.

• The quartet of Gary Helseth, Ron Tamori, Lee Gilmore and Mel Younker shot a 115 gross to win the Silver Oak Senior Men's Cha Cha Cha event. Jim Silsby, Dick Green, Buzz Wagner and Roland Owings were second at 117, and Tony Barbaria, Terry Thomas, Hermann Hartung and Bill Challenger were third at 118.

Essary wins event

at Carson Valley

Don Essary won the A flight at Carson Valley Club with a net 65.

Roger Hala was second with a 68 and Marc Menezes was third with a 69. Anthony Moore won the B flight with a 69, while Chuck Householder was second with a 70 and Joe Morrison was third with a 73.

John Guidicatti won C flight with a 71, while Ed Hunter and Neil Bain were at 71 and 73, respectively.

Scharfe wins flight

at Empire Ranch

Steve Scharfe fired a net 62 to win the A flight for the Empire Ranch Senior Men's Club. Bill Hetherton and Tom Zogorski were next with 64s.

Lew Dodgion won the B flight with a 62, while Henry Ortiz and John Sullivan finished with 65s. Ken Cuneo won Flight C with a 60, while Neil Sharpe and Tony Barbaria shot 64 and 65, respectively. Joe O'Brien won D flight with a 63, while Cleve Dalen had a 65.

Three teams tie

for 1st at T. Canyon

Charlie Cockerill, Steve Archer and TC Boice shot a 126 to tie for first with the teams of Jim Fitzpatrck, Larry Greenman and Steve Rydel, and Butch Cattanach, Carl Baker, Jerry Hughes and Mike Schellin at Thunder Canyon Men's Club 2 best balls of 4 event.

On the women's side, Lynn Greenman, Sharon Smith, Caludia Goodnight and Shelly Brewster won with a 130, while Barbee Waldren, Carla Watts, Mary Anderson and Jeanne Brennan tied for second at 133 with Joyce Powell, Kathy Archer, Carol Boice and LeAnne Crowell.
