COMMUNITY: Adventure Run Saturday at Kirkwood

Kirkwood Mountain Resort is the site for the 32nd annual 5K/10K Adventure Run Sept. 1.

There is a 1.5-mile run for kids at 9 a.m. with the 5 and 10k races immediately following. The races are presented by the Tahoe Mountain Milers Running Club and the Kirkwood Volunteer Fire Department.

Registration for the 5 and 10k races is $40, and there is an opportunity to win season ski pass. Registration for the kids race is $10.

Shabi wins low gross

crown for Empire seniors

Jim Shabi shot a 155 over 36 holes to win the Empire Ranch Senior Men's Club low gross Flight A championship.

Other low gross flight winners were Bud Dick (165), Verne Rosse (178) and Martin Johnson (183).

Roger Maxwell won the A flight low net title with a 131. Other low net flight winners were Ray McPartlin (128), Nils Sharpe (132) and Joe O'Brien (132).

Schreiber wins CVGC

match-play title

Jeff Schreiber defeated Marc Menezes 5 and 4 to win the Carson Valley Men's Club match-play championship.

In Flight A, Joe Morrison knocked off Charles Poe 4 and 3; Augie Martinez nipped Bruce Sanford 1-up in Flight B; Larry Lockwood routed Gerry Bing 5 and 4 in Flight C.

Plymells win crown

at Thunder Canyon

Randy and Barbara Plymell combined for a score of 100 to win Thunder Canyon Country Club's Couples championship on Aug. 26.

The format was four-ball stroke play on the front nine and combined net on the back nine.

Larry and Elaine Easterling were second with a 104, while Mike and Donna Schellin were third at 106. Three teams tied for fourth at 108.

• Susan Hood finished with 19 points to win Thunder Canyon's Modified Par Points tournament on Aug. 24. Ellen Ewing was second with 10 and Sandi Oglesby was third with 7.

Mike Bennert took first place for the men with 17, two ahead of Bob Bittman. Bob Pike and Mike Judge tied for third with 11.

Beauchman wins Sunday

crown at Silver Oak

Milo Beauchman won low gross and low net to win the Sunday Men's Club Flight 1 championship at Silver Oak.

Beauchman had gross rounds of 71 and 70 which converted to 66 and 65, respectively for low net.

Jim Silsby was second (147) in low gross and Chang Suh (150) was third. Silsby was second in low net with a 137, while Andy Bohm had a 138 for third low net.

In Flight 2, Dennis Baughman won low gross with a 166, four shots ahead of James Shabi and five strokes better than Bill Whitstone and Frank Maricich.

Baughman won low net with a 136. Kevin Silsby was second with a 142, while Whitstone and Maricich tied for third at 143.

Polanski registers ace

at Empire Ranch

Reno's Albert Polanski scored his second career ace on the 145-yard par-3 on the Red course.

Leiper, Moreno win

Dayton member-guest

Gary Leiper, Dayton, and Louis Moreno, Ventura, Calif., played solid golf in the 2-man total score format in the final round to win the 21st Dayton Valley Palmer Club Member-Guest tournament Aug. 24-26.

Leiper and Moreno won both low gross and low net 36-hole totals, where the first round was played with a 2-man best ball format. Leiper and Moreno were awarded the low gross prize, as is the tournament tradition to determine overall champion.

Shawn Casey, Dayton and Markus Zinke, Gardnerville won second place low gross honors.

Charlie Oliver and Mike Walker, both from Dayton, finished with the second low net 36-hole total and were awarded the first low net prize. Second low net went to Marco Digiacinto, Fallon and Bob Hammon, Fallon, and Jim Crawford, Dayton and Bob Crawford, Roseville, Calif. claimed the third low net award.

Dave Goles, Dayton, and Brandon Goles, Reno, won the annual horse race played following the first round. Lamar Bailey and Mark Wade, both of Dayton, won the first annual Par 3 Shootout played as a warm-up on Friday.

Dilks wins MMA debut

at Rural Rumble

In the night's bloodiest bout, Charles Dilks hung on for a majority decision win over Alex Wayman. The Carson City fighters battled through three rounds in their MMA debuts in a heavyweight (265 pounds) bout.

Dilks, who works for the Nevada Appeal, dominated the first round with crushing blows to Wayman's head and face. Wayman suffered a black and swollen left eye, a bump on his forehead and was cut below the eye in the first round.

Dilks' pressure kept Wayman on the defensive throughout the round as the two fighters brawled in what can be described as an old-time bare-knuckle brawl. The fight was stopped several times so Wayman could clean the left side of his face from the waterfall of blood.

"It was hard," Dilks said. "Once I saw him hurt, I tried to go in for the kill. (He's) a tough guy."

Wayman, though, survived the first round and was able to wear down Dilks in the third. Wayman became the aggressor and kept Dilks on the run with countless punches and knees to the abdomen.

Wayman nearly earned a submission in the second round when he secured a guillotine hold, but Dilks was able to avoid the tapout as the bell sounded. In the third round, Wayman again found himself with a guillotine hold, but Dilks was able to break free.

"To be honest, he was going for the guillotine, but it wasn't cinched up under my chin," Dilks said. "He didn't have it around my neck, so I didn't feel I was in any danger."
