PREP: Carson boys fall to Lowry

WINNEMUCCA - Lowry, the defending NIAA 1A state champion, dropped Carson from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 57-44 victory Friday night in the second day of the Winnemucca Tournament at the Winnemucca Events Center.

Carson, 3-1, plays Virgin Valley at 10 a.m. today in its final game of the three-day event.

"They are big up front at 6-7, 6-4 and 6-3, and they come off the bench with a guy who is 6-3," Carson coach Carlos Mendeguia said. "Their height really bothered us; changed our shots throughout the game."

What also didn't help was Carson's Rafe King missing almost the whole first half after picking up two quick fouls three minutes into the game. Mendeguia said he had no qualms about pulling King so early.

"The refs were calling the game really tight," Mendeguia said. "I wasn't able to take a chance by putting him back in."

Matt Nolan picked up the slack nicely, scoring eight of his team-high 23 points as Lowry walked off the floor with a 26-17 lead. Lowry led 14-2 at one point, and was outscored 15-12 the remainder of the half.

"Matt wanted to prove to their point guard that he was better," Mendeguia said. "He took it personally. He really stepped up his game."

Lowry outscored Carson 31-27 in the second half. Mendeguia said the Senators did a better job of finding the openings in the final 16 minutes.

King played the entire second half and finished with nine points. Bruce McIntosh added four points.

VARSITY GIRLS BASKETBALL

HUG 57, DAYTON 50

RENO - A slow start for the second straight game cost the Dust Devils dearly Friday night at the Winnemucca Tournament.

Dayton, 0-2, plays Fernley at 10 a.m. today and Wooster at 1.

"We came out flat," Dayton coach Cliff Serawop said. "The girls weren't focused and we didn't take care of the ball.

"Our defense picked it up in the second half. We contested a lot of shots and didn't give them any easy shots in the second half. We finished strong like we did Thursday."

Taylor Ingersoll led Dayton with 12 points, Cheyenne Strong added 11 and Maribel Ledezma contributed 10.

WRESTLING

CARSON HOSTING TOURNAMENT

Carson High's wrestling team hosts the 15th annual Capitol City Dual Tournament at Morse Burley Gym.

Action gets under way at 9 a.m. Each of the 12 schools entered will wrestle three duals and then there will be two rounds of individual matches.

Carson is wrestling Bishop Manogue, Wooster and Lowry. The first two duals also will count as league duals.

FRESHMEN GIRLS BASKETBALL

CARSON 56, HUG 3

RENO - Baily Allen scored 18 points and Melissa Glanzmann added 10 to lead the Senators to their second consecutive victory.

Glanzmann also had 10 steals and five assists. Serena Miller contributed four points and 10 steals, while Andrea Maffei had six points, six steals and four assists.

"Our defense was impenetrable," coach Nick Halen said. "We ran the offense great and played as a team."
