Supervisors consider water, sewer rate study

A request to study Carson City's water and sewer rates will go before city supervisors on Thursday.

The study would cost $99,595 and be funded from the city's water and sewer funds.

FCS Group would review and analyze current rate data, cost of service and policy objectives in order to determine who should pay what share of the costs of providing the services. That includes connection charges and development of a rate model for staff.

According to staff reports, the initial study would be revenue neutral with overall rates not raised as a result. But staff noted that individual components of the rates might be adjusted up or down.

"This does not mean that rates won't be raised in the future depending on future revenue needs," the staff report notes.

The board also will consider a plan to use $72,876 from the redevelopment budget to replace the aging community center sign with a new LED message board that could be used to promote events in the redevelopment district as well as other community programs.

The board will do its final canvass of the Nov. 6 election results in the race between Molly Walt and Jim Shirk. Walt asked for a recount since she lost by just 25 votes but the recount conducted last week found insufficient evidence of any error to change the results.

Shirk will be sworn in as Ward 4 supervisor in January along with Brad Bonkowski who won the Ward 2 seat vacated by the retiring Shelly Aldean.

The board meeting starts at 8:30 a.m. Thursday in the Sierra Room at the Community Center.
